Paid Marine Science Education Internship

The Pigeon Key Foundation, a 501(c) not-for-profit, is looking for desirable candidates for their 2013 education season.  The internship runs from the end of February 2013 through mid August 2013.   Possibility of full-time employment does exist to hired interns who demonstrate a superior ability at the position.  Internship provides food, weekly stipend and on-island housing.

Interested applicants must have a minimum of an undergraduate degree in marine biology, biology, ecology, education, conservation, environmental science, or other related degree.  The successful candidate should be familiar with/have an interest in marine ecosystems, be a good swimmer, have the ability to speak articulately and confidently in front of a group, and be willing to cook, clean and work long hours including many weekends.  The successful candidate should have teaching experience or express an affinity toward educating students.

Marine Science Education Intern Responsibilities:

**this list is not exhaustive but will give interested applicants a better idea of what jobs will be required of them and in what proportion.  Anyone WITHOUT an interest in conducting any of the work below SHOULD NOT apply**

• Marine Education (75% of internship)
  • Teaching students age 10-20 on a variety of marine science subjects.  Days will be long (sometimes 6am-10pm) and often include weekends.  Interns, with full-time staff, will be responsible for teaching marine science classes and cooking all meals for groups.  Other group-related activities can include (but are not limited to) snorkeling, off-island excursions, cleaning, and fishing.
• Island Maintenance (10% of internship)
  • When groups are not on island, interns will be responsible for island upkeep and preparing for upcoming groups.  Responsibilities will include cleaning, sweeping, moping, raking, weed whacking, washing sheets, painting, pruning island grounds, cleaning aquariums, etc.
• Office Work (5%)
  • Office work can include making group workbooks, implementing new marine science programs, updating memberships, updating the foundation’s website/facebook/twitter accounts, organizing, filing, sending emails, etc.  Proficiency with computers is preferred of interested applicants.
• Various (10%)
  • Other jobs interns may be asked to do include working at events, running work errands, or continuing/implementing research.  This list is not exhaustive.

Applicants will live at the foundation, an ideal working environment located on a 5-acre island in the middle of the Florida Keys.  As such, successful applicants should be able to work well with various people in a small-work environment.

Qualifications:

- A degree in marine biology, biology, ecology, education, conservation, or environmental science are preferred.
- An interest (if not experience) in teaching students
- A positive attitude
- Willingness to cook and clean
- The ability to work in a group as well as independently in an expeditious manner

- Capability of working well with other people in a small-work environment

-Computer skills are preferred but not required.
