Description

Overview

We’re ZSL, an international conservation charity. Our vision is a world where wildlife thrives and we’re working every day to achieve this. From investigating the health threats facing animals, to helping people and wildlife live alongside each other, we are committed to bringing wildlife back from the brink of extinction. Through the work of our pioneering scientists, our dedicated conservationists and our unrivalled animal experts in our two zoos, we guide and enable others in the UK and all across the world. Inspiring, informing, empowering – working for wildlife.

Role Profile

ZSL is seeking an intern to work on a 1 year project funded by the Marine Stewardship Council examining the benthic habitats of Greenland.

The West coast of Greenland is home to commercially important coldwater prawn and halibut fisheries. Their entrance into the MSC sustainability scheme has highlighted a concerning lack of knowledge of benthic habitats in the area, and the impact of trawling activities upon these habitats.

The project will be collating and analysing video surveys of the West Greenland seabed to document the structure, function and diversity of seafloor communities. These data will be used to map, model and predict distributions of benthic habitats, assess the impact of trawling and highlight potential vulnerable marine ecosystems.

This project provides an opportunity for a recent graduate to gain conservation science experience working for a conservation research institute.

Initially this post is likely to be working from home, with a computer provided. Training and meetings will be conducted remotely until the current COVID restrictions are lifted.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Examination of benthic survey videos and images
  • Identification and annotation of benthic fauna using the Biigle platform
  • Identification and description of vulnerable marine habitats
  • Researching scientific literature
  • Drafting and preparing project reports
  • Provide ongoing support on project planning, implementation, analysis and interpretation of results
  • General administrative support for the project
  • Interacting and communicating with researchers
  • Conducting scientific outreach

Person Specification

  • BSc/MSc in marine biology or related subject or equivalent experience
  • Desirable to have previous experience conducting marine research projects
  • Any experience collecting, collating and analysing benthic videos and/or photography is valuable
  • Previous experience conducting outreach activities for schoolchildren is a bonus
  • Use of statistical, GIS, image analysis software packages
