Description

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit whose scientists and engineers work to solve some of our planet’s most pressing environmental and safety problems. UCS combines technical analysis and effective organizing and advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions for stemming the tide of global warming, sustainable food policy and agriculture, energy and transportation, fighting misinformation and reducing the threat of catastrophic nuclear war.

How do we do that? We work with the Science Network, an inclusive community of more than 20,000 scientists, engineers, and other experts across the country working to educate the public. A key piece of building the UCS Science Network is engaging a diverse group of early career scientists (graduate students and post-docs) and building new leaders in science advocacy. We want to support early career scientists so they can speak up and learn to be effective scientist-advocates.

Help us help young scientists to be better prepared to contribute to policy, work with community, and to speak and act on their knowledge for the public good.

Responsibilities

  • Help sign up energized new early career Science Network members
  • Help design and provide support for a scientist mentorship program within the Science Network
  • Help develop promotional and other educational materials for meaningful engagement within the campus based pilot projects
  • Help scientists on campuses get connected to UCS campaigns
  • Maintain tracking and evaluation impact of the campus-based pilot projects and recruitment efforts
  • Research opportunities for connecting with historically black colleges and universities, women’s universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, and tribal colleges

Qualifications and Experience

  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal skills
  • Effective communication and relationship building
  • Experience in advocacy organizing, especially on campuses, is helpful
  • Self-motivated
  • Knowledge of office and administrative support procedures
  • MS Word and Excel proficiency
  • Strong organizational skills
  • A scientific background is helpful, though not required
  • Interest in science advocacy, and desire to learn about public interest/non-profit work
  • Willing to look at the work through a racial justice and equity lens and identify opportunities to connect with and engage environmental and social justice communities is crucial
  • Working towards a bachelor’s degree in social or physical sciences is helpful but not required

Little or no exertion; will require extended periods at a computer. Candidate will be required to travel occasionally to meetings (approximately 3-5 overnights).

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

UCS is an equal opportunity employer continually seeking to diversify its staff. We’re dedicated to broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy. We’re also committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely diverse backgrounds can thrive. We've adopted this commitment because we believe the inclusion of culturally diverse perspectives will improve our work and produce better societal and environmental outcomes for all, including historically disenfranchised communities. We are actively seeking people who bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to join us in this work.

Compensation, Hours, and Location: This is a full-time, 6 month, paid internship based in UCS’s Cambridge, MA office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary is the equivalent of $15 per hour, $31,200 annually. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.

To Apply: Please submit a cover letter, resume, salary requirement, and how you learned about the position via email to internship@ucsusa.org and include “CSD Outreach Intern” in the subject line. Email materials in Word or PDF format only. No phone calls please. Deadline: July 5, 2017 or until filled.
