The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit whose scientists and engineers work to solve some of our planet’s most pressing environmental and safety problems. UCS combines technical analysis and effective organizing and advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions for stemming the tide of global warming, sustainable food policy and agriculture, energy and transportation, fighting misinformation and reducing the threat of catastrophic nuclear war.

The Outreach Coordinator will work within UCS’s Climate and Energy program to conceive, coordinate, and implement outreach and capacity-building activities in support of the department’s Power Ahead and Fossil Fuel Company Accountability campaigns. The Power Ahead Campaign seeks to harness the power of the clean energy transition taking place across the country. As more states position themselves as clean energy and climate leaders, momentum is building toward national action that can deliver net zero carbon emissions in the U.S. by 2050. Using the strength of UCS’s energy economics and analytic expertise and Science Network and supporter base, you will help move states to adopt renewable energy and carbon market policies. The Fossil Fuel Company Accountability Campaign challenges major fossil fuel companies to meet emerging societal expectations for responsible action in a carbon-constrained world.

  • Represent UCS in select coalitions and assist in developing coalition strategy and outreach efforts. Identify and cultivate new partners for UCS’s campaign work among racial equity and climate justice groups.
  • Work with communications staff to develop media strategies and help craft media materials and messages.

  • Maintain and update campaign-related databases, documents and other resources.
  • Represent UCS on social media.
  • Represent UCS at conferences and other events as needed to increase UCS’s presence and attract new supporters.

  • Applicants should possess a bachelor’s degree.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience developing campaign strategy and tactics, organizing grasstops constituents, coordinating outreach events, and engaging supporters through online and offline activities is required.
  • Education/experience in climate change and energy is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated interest in corporate accountability is preferred.
  • Candidate must have strong written communication and public speaking skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with professionals who may be expert and/or prominent in their fields.
  • Solid level of understanding of database maintenance, on-line organizing tools, and Microsoft Office is required. Interest in and experience with social media activism a strong plus.
  • Three to five years of comparable and relevant experience in outreach and/or organizing.
  • May spend extended periods at computer terminal.
