About Us:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

 

Overview:

ZSL London Zoo is looking for a fixed term Outreach and Partnerships Officer to join our team. This nine month fixed-term post is from August 2016 to May 2017 and will help ZSL achieve the objectives of the development phase of Heritage Lottery Funded Snowdon Aviary refurbishment project.

 

The Snowdon Aviary is a landmark of historic, cultural and architectural significance. With HLF support, ZSL will undertake essential repairs to its iconic structure, transform it into a modern exhibit by creating a stunning new primate walk-through and community learning space, and maximise opportunities for public enjoyment and learning.

 
Role Profile:

The Outreach and Partnerships Officer will play a key role in coordinating and delivering this activity.  The  role will achieve this through the design and delivery of specific audience research, consultation and evaluation methodology; identifying, contacting and recruiting individuals and groups to be involved in audience research to identify opportunities for programming activity; co-developing a range of activities to be delivered; writing internal and external reporting and recommendations on audience research findings; internal project communications and attendance at a range of project meetings.

 
Person Specification:

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following criteria:

  • Be educated to degree level in a relevant subject such as social science, psychology, museum studies, educational or communication discipline or equivalent qualication or be able to demonstrate equivalent critical skills based on relevant work experience would be an advantage.
  • Have exemplary project management skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of audience consultation, evaluation and visitor research analysis, including quantitative and qualitative methods, visitor tracking, focus groups, questionnaire design and interviews, preferably within a zoo, aquaria or museum context.
  • Have prior experience or being part of or delivering learning activities to community groups.
  • Knowledge of learning style frameworks.
  • Some knowledge of biological sciences and conservation.
  • Have a good understanding of attraction audiences and how people learn.
  • Understand the ethics of visitor research and compliance with data protection regulations.
  • Prior experience of working on Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) applications or delivery and development of HLF funded projects would be an advantage.
  • Proven track record of report writing.
  • Prior experience of commissioning evaluation contractors an advantage.
  • Ability to communicate to a non-specialist audience.
  • Excellent communication skills required to approach and engage members of the public in evaluation, putting them at ease.
  • Ability to support and mentor other members of staff and visiting students and establish good relationships with colleagues from a number of different departments. 

Please note: The role will require the post holder to be an advocate for practices and innovations new to ZSL; a high level of sensitivity is therefore required and the post holder will need to gain the trust of stakeholders.
