Outdoor Education Program Apprentice 2014

The Cape Eleuthera Institute is seeking an Outdoor Education Program Apprentice to support its education programs. Primary responsibilities include assisting with delivering outdoor education programs for middle school and high school students at the Cape Eleuthera Institute. This is a leadership role that includes: organizing logistics, orientating participants to their surroundings, teaching fish identification and basic marine, coastal, and terrestrial ecology courses, touring the island, snorkeling, creating morning exercise programs, sea kayaking, community outreach, camping, enforcing rules, dorm duties, and monitoring the well-being of students and their chaperones/instructors. Secondary responsibilities may include assisting with research and work projects at CEI. Research opportunities may include, but are not limited to: cobia aquaculture, aquaponics, shark and bonefish research, etc. Work projects may include reef ball construction, landscaping, and boat maintenance.  This position requires the ability to work long hours with a close-knit group of peers and live in an isolated community. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to get valuable experience in organizing and delivering experiential learning programs.

Qualifications:

Must have proof of Bahamian Citizenship.

Desire to work with students of all ages and a highly motivated staff.  Ability to live and work in a small, remote setting and share a dormitory with up to 6 other community members. Applicants should have a background in teaching/supervising students in an environmental setting. A marine biology/environmental science and sustainable system background is preferred. Wilderness medical certification is preferred (WFR, WAFA, etc.). Professional demeanor and desire to work on an ecologically-friendly campus.  Ability to live without regular access to "city life,” shopping, entertainment and other comforts.

Skills:

Experience with planning and leading small expeditions for sea kayaking, beach camping, and snorkeling. Ability to operate boats and manual transmission vehicles, and have water safety training is a plus. Applicant should be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and Power Point.
