This post is a Part-Time and Part-Year opportunity, with the season running from 1 April to 31 August each calendar year. The salary quoted above is the Full-Time equivalent based on a 37 hour week, Monday to Friday.
Appointments to the Forestry Commission are made at the entry level of the salary quoted above except in exceptional circumstances where a candidates’ experience and skills may justify a higher starting salary.
The successful candidate will be required to undertake a Basic Disclosure check in line with the cabinet office Baseline Security Standard.
The duties of this post require a flexible working week to allow for rostering on weekends, bank holidays and evenings (with the exception of Christmas Day).
This is an exciting opportunity to become part of the Osprey team for one of the Lake District’s top visitor attractions. The site is the home of the indoor viewing area for the Lake District Ospreys as well as a key provider of adventurous activity including mountain biking, Go Ape high ropes and walking.
North England Forest District is headed by Graham Gill and has a complement of 115 staff. The District is the largest in England, covering some 86 000 ha formed by the merger of the North East England Forest District with the Cumbria and north Lancashire parts of North West England Forest District.
The District has four visitor centres at Grizedale, Whinlatter, Kielder and Hamsterley. The public forest estate in North England District attracts over one million visits per annum.
The District comprises 61 000 ha of forest and 25 000ha of open land. The forest area is 90% conifer and 10% broadleaf. Annual timber production is 600 000 m3 (30% of England’s timber production).
The District has 45 SSSIs totalling over 10 000 ha and is a major contributor to local biodiversity through projects such as red squirrels, ospreys and red kites, forest re-wilding, limestone woodland and blanket bog restoration.
Purpose of the Job
Show visitors ospreys and wildlife at the viewpoint, and build support for the Lake District Osprey Project and its partner organisations.
To raise visitor awareness of the RSPB’s, Forestry Commission and Lake District National Parks conservation work and increase their interest in birds and other wildlife.
To introduce visitors to the Lake District ospreys and the RSPB, the Forestry Commission and National Park in an enthusiastic and inspirational manner.
Provide high standard of customer care and assistance for visitors to see the ospreys
Be actively involved with the promotion and publicity of the project, developing creative ways to enhance its profile and providing relevant and timely information to the Lake District Osprey Project Press Officer for press releases
Introduce visitors to the work of the Forestry Commission, RSPB and National Park and link the ospreys to wider conservation messages
Provide an enthusiastic welcome to visitors, offer information on wildlife and to respond to questions in an enthusiastic manner
Contribute to volunteer training and provide day to day support for volunteers working on the Osprey Project
Set up the stand each, this will involve some heavy lifting

The duties of this post require the applicant to have a full current driving licence that enables them to drive in the UK. However, the Forestry Commission is willing to consider any proposals put forward by applicants that would allow them to do the job by other means.
