Osprey Protection Officer (2 posts)

Status: full-time/fixed term (for c. 8 weeks)

Salary: £13,500 pro rata

Location: Loch of the Lowes, near Dunkeld

Closing date: noon, Friday 13 February 2015

The successful candidates will monitor all aspects of the returning breeding ospreys to ensure protection of them, their nest and eggs.  This will be covered on a predominantly night-shift working pattern.  Free accommodation on the site’s well equipped and comfortable, eco-bothy is available.

Duties include:

  • Covert observations from the bird hide to ensure protection of birds, eggs and nest
  • Recording feeding times, parent changeovers and movement of other ospreys on the reserve
  • Observing visual monitors overnight to ensure protection of the nest
  • Liaising with local volunteers to ensure permanent 24-hour protection is in place
  • Liaison with members of the public – answering questions, disseminating information about the ospreys in an interesting, friendly manner
  • Liaison with Police Wildlife Crime Officer as appropriate
  • Patrol of reserve on a regular basis
  • Occasional intervention with members of the public to ascertain their intentions and point out the law regarding Schedule One bird species

Familiarity with the species and its threats, knowledge of wild birds and the law, natural history and nature conservation is essential. This is an out-of-doors role in remote surroundings, where the postholders will be required to have excellent organisational and communication skills. A current UK driving licence is essential and having access to a personal vehicle would be advantageous.

Applicants should be aware that the appointment and duration of these posts depend on the successful return of the ospreys to Loch of the Lowes.
