The Gunung Palung Orangutan Conservation Program (GPOCP) is looking for a postgraduate researcher, or someone with equivalent experience, to lead our orangutan nest survey project in Gunung Palung National Park (West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo) and the surrounding buffer zone. This project, supported in large part by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Great Apes Conservation Fund, consists of ground- and drone-based nest surveys, some phenology data collection, and some GIS work. The Survey Manager will be in charge of the entire project, including project logistics, management of the survey team, and data analysis.
Qualifications/Experience:
The successful candidate will have experience with primate surveys, ideally great ape nest surveys. As we have never trialed drone-based surveys in our landscape before, technological savvy and prior experience using drones will be looked upon favorably. Previous experience working in Asia and basic knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia is helpful but not required. He or she will work closely with GPOCP’s Program Director and Research Manager to plan and execute all data collection and coordination with local conservation partners. The candidate will be responsible for completing all analyses in accordance with a schedule set out by the Program Director. Knowledge of the program DISTANCE, as well as spatial analysis techniques (primarily in GIS) will be extremely useful. We aim to publish these analyses, with the successful candidate as a co-author on the resulting paper(s).
