Job Purpose Summary
To implement SNH policies and programme in Sutherland and, where appropriate more widely within Northern Isles and North Highland.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
1. To assist with statutory consultations arising from protected areas such as Special Protection Areas, Special Areas of Conservation, Sites of Special Scientific Interest and National Scenic Areas, including renewable energy proposals, other development proposals, applications for consent and SRDP applications.
2. To develop contacts with land managers of protected areas to encourage their positive management and to achieve or maintain the special interests of these areas in favourable condition.
3. To assist with Site Condition Monitoring and Site Check programmes on protected areas.
4. To manage the Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve. This will include Health and Safety inspections, NNR budget, input to Reserve management plan, provision of information to public and organisation of events.
5. To take a lead role across Unit for specific topics, depending upon areas of expertise and represent the Unit at meetings and seminars where appropriate.
Competency 1 - Technical and Specialist Skills & Knowledge - Essential criteria
1. Relevant degree and/or experience in an environmental or countryside management field.
2. Sound knowledge and understanding of Highland ecology, landuse and natural heritage issues.
3. Knowledge and understanding of protected areas.
4. Good natural history identification skills and experience of monitoring habitats and species.
5. Good written and verbal skills.
6. Good IT skills.
7. Driving licence.
Competency 1 - Technical and Specialist Skills & Knowledge- Desirable criteria
1. Experience of working with landowners including sporting estates and crofting community.
2. Experience of working in partnership with other bodies and general public.
3. Familiarity with geographic area covered by the post.
4. Knowledge of recreation, access and environmental education issues.
5. Awareness of landscape issues.
6. Awareness of health and safety issues.
