Staff Attorney – Oceans Program Full time San Francisco, California
General position overview: The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a full-time Staff Attorney to work on protecting ocean ecosystems and marine wildlife. The emphasis of the Staff Attorney position will be advocating for the protection of vulnerable ocean wildlife and habitats from the threats of ocean acidification, climate change, industrial fishing, offshore oil drilling and pollution. The Center’s Oceans Program uses law and policy to advocate for greenhouse gas reductions, reform destructive fishing practices and protect sensitive marine species and habitats.
Responsibilities: The attorney will be responsible for developing, managing and litigating cases, as well as engaging in policy advocacy; interacting with state and federal agencies, other environmental organizations, and the public; and doing media outreach.
Requirements:
- Excellent research, writing and oral advocacy skills
- A demonstrated commitment to environmental protection
- Scientific literacy
- An ability to manage a litigation docket and work with other lawyers and staff members as part of an effective team
- A strong work ethic
- The ideal candidate will have two-plus years of litigation experience and a biological sciences background
- Familiarity with the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Magnuson-Stevens Act and other relevant statutes is desired
The salary for the Staff Attorney position is commensurate with other nonprofit organizations and includes an excellent vacation and benefits package. The preferred location for the Staff Attorney position is San Francisco, California.
