Job Title: Online Fundraising Director, Membership & Direct Marketing

Reports To: Director, Membership & Direct Marketing; Dotted Line to Director, Digital Strategies

Department: Office of Advancement in conjunction with Digital Strategies

Supervises: Assistant Director, Donor/Membership Marketing & Acquisition; Other Positions TBD
  
Context: The Online Fundraising Director is responsible for developing and managing a comprehensive online fundraising strategy, including internal and external promotion, content creation, design development and implementation, and on-line partnership building. Reporting to the Director, Membership & Direct Marketing and working closely with the Director, Digital Strategies, this individual will provide strategic guidance and tactical support to new and existing marketing and fundraising efforts being carried out online. Being a "true student" of the online fundraising space and understanding the interaction of offline media/channels and online response is critical.

Scope: The Online Fundraising Director is responsible for providing both strategic advice and tactical skills in order to make the online fundraising program a success. This requires having detailed experience managing online fundraising programs and having broad knowledge of the technical and digital strategies available in order to grow this mode of direct marketing development. This position will also interact with many departments within the Sierra Club and will require being a team leader who can orchestrate ideas from others, organizing multiple viewpoints and priorities into cohesive direction. Along with providing strategy, performing analysis, and promoting partnerships, this position also will focus on the technical aspects of monitoring, managing, and controlling the day-to-day operations of the online fundraising program and the systems that support it.     

Job Activities:

At the strategic level, this position is responsible for:

1. Monitoring and understanding the online, social and mobile fundraising landscape.

2. Formulating strategies that will result in member/supporter/activist growth and revenue growth from new and existing member/supporter/activists, utilizing both best practices and leading edge methods.

3. Integrating those strategies with the efforts of colleagues from Digital Strategies, Communications, Conservation, and Advancement.

At the tactical level, the position is responsible for:

1. Collaborating with colleagues on the Digital Strategies, Conservation and Communications teams, to optimize revenue-generating and list and traffic building opportunities in all advocacy, outreach, and media activities.

2.Working in concert with Assistant Director, Donor/Membership Marketing and other Advancement colleagues who are responsible for "offline" programs including new donor acquisition, monthly donor program, fund appeals, renewals, reinstates and peer-to-peer programs with the goal of maximizing donor value through multi-channel fundraising efforts.

3. Share tools, techniques and best practices with Sierra Club chapters to optimize online fundraising.

4. Identifying and executing strategic partnerships in conjunction with Digital Strategies and Communications to acquire compelling content, features, and online tools that support new donor acquisition or increased donations from existing donor base. Work with colleagues in Digital Strategies on online development to incorporate new features and functionality in support of revenue goals.

5. Working in partnership with Digital Strategies and Communications to develop a mobile communications and fundraising platform.

6. Utilizing Web and email analytics to measure the effectiveness of all online programs and to make recommendations to improve the effectiveness of the efforts. Provides clear direction for the systems and data requirements for the online programs.

7. Coordinating efforts with other departments within Sierra Club and chapters to fully engage internal audiences such as members, e-newsletter subscribers, online activists, Outings participants, event participants, social media participants and volunteers.

8. Serving as the primary contact for the Sierra Club’s online fundraising consulting firm.

9. Troubleshooting site and email problems and opportunities with Communications/Digital Strategies team as well as Convio and other external vendors to resolve issues rapidly and effectively.

10. Managing promotions with partners (i.e. Care2, Change.org), including contracts, data suppressions, and results.

11. Coordinating online fundraising calendar in conjunction with the Digital Strategy team.

12. Supporting and facilitating all online fundraising and cultivation emails for planned giving, Summit Circle, and other major giving donor programs.

13. Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills:

-- Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of professional work experience developing and implementing online fundraising programs, preferably in a large, non-profit setting.
 
-- Strong tech skills and experience that ideally include an understanding of: large-scale database management; nonprofit constituency relationship management systems (i.e. Convio); and web-application development processes.

-- Experience working with Google Adwords, Google Keywords and Google Analytics.
 
-- Strong analytical skills and the ability to make data driven decisions that lead to innovative approaches for developing online fundraising programs.

-- Experience collaborating with others in a complex, dynamic organizational environment.

-- Demonstrated track record of successful online fundraising in an environment of similar complexity.

-- Ability to develop trust and strong collaborative working relationships.

-- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write and speak clearly and effectively, with excellent listening skills.

-- Self-starter with an entrepreneurial and creative approach to problem-solving, and the ability to take advantage of emerging opportunities and trends.

-- Individual with high energy level, self-confidence and a positive “can-do” attitude are essential.

-- The highly collaborative nature of this position requires exceptional communication and relationship building skills along with excellent project management skills.
