OnEarth Articles Editor – New York

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 1.3 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.  Founded in 1970 by a group of law students and attorneys at the forefront of the environmental movement, our people helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws. Today, our staff of more than 300 lawyers, scientists and policy experts work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Beijing.

Position Summary:

OnEarth is the award-wining quarterly magazine published by the Natural Resources Defense Council, one of the nation’s leading environmental organizations.  This is an extraordinary opportunity to work for an independent, nationally recognized publication with extremely high journalistic and literary standards. We publish original articles (including profiles, essays, and investigative pieces) on a wide range of topics (from politics to science to nature). The authors, photographers, and artists who contribute to our magazine and our web site are among the best working in American journalism today.

The OnEarth Articles Editor is a critical member of the senior editorial team for our print and online publications. The Articles Editor is responsible for assigning and editing the front sections of the magazine (Frontlines, Living Green, Synthesist), assigning and editing feature articles (in close partnership with the Executive Editor and Editor-in-Chief), generating story ideas, writing features and short pieces for the magazine, assigning and editing articles for OnEarth.org, as well as blogging for OnEarth.org (in close partnershp with the OnEarth.org Editor).

Responsibilities: 

• Edits and assigns front of the book sections (Frontlines, Living Green, Synthesist)

• Edits and assigns feature articles

• Edits and assigns online features

• Writes feature stories, shorter articles, and online articles

• Recruits new authors to the magazine

• Helps supervise OnEarth interns

Required Skills

Qualifications:

• At least 10 years of experience at a comparable high-quality print magazine

• Exceptional, proven writing abilities as a narrative journalist

• Exceptional editing skills

• Exceptional ability to bring feature articles alive on the page and online, from inception to completion, including: generating story ideas, finding suitable authors, assigning and editing manuscripts, collaborating with the art department on photography, illustration and layout, composing excellent display copy, working closely with production (copyediting, factchecking), and shepherding article to final proofs

• Experience and familiarity with and enthusiasm for online journalism      

• Familiarity with—and most importantly, a passion for—environmental issues

• Ability to work closely and good-naturedly with a small group of colleagues

• A background in or familiarity with scientific disciplines
