Description

The Olympic Peninsula Program Manager leads WSC’s habitat conservation program in watersheds on the western side of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. The position will focus primarily on advancing habitat restoration and protection priorities initiated under the organization’s Washington Program. The position is based on the Olympic Peninsula and reports to the Washington Program Director.

This program is dedicated to the conservation of wild salmon and steelhead on the Olympic Peninsula through the strategic protection and restoration of critical habitats, and the science-based management of regional fisheries. The person in this position must possess natural partnership building and communication skills, and have an ability to collaborate with community members, fishermen, and government and tribal representatives.

The individual in this position is responsible for the ongoing development and implementation of multi-year regional initiatives that restore and protect wild salmon/steelhead habitat, and improve the health of wild fish populations. This requires the ability to define bold, yet achievable, long-term conservation goals; maintain the relationships and partnerships necessary to achieve them; and implement the day to day management activities necessary to build and advance the program.

The position requires a thorough understanding of the habitat needs of wild salmon and steelhead, the factors limiting productivity of individual stocks, and the governance structures and policies that drive land use and fisheries management decisions.

Responsibilities. This position will work closely with the Washington Program Director to:

  • Continue development of the Cold Water Connection Campaign;
  • Leverage and coordinate funding for implementation of high priority projects identified in the Cold Water Connection Campaign;
  • Manage contracts associated with implementation of habitat restoration activities;
  • Develop and implement multi-year targeted habitat protection and restoration initiatives, including the establishment of interim milestones to assess progress;
  • Build strategic relationships and partnerships with key regional stakeholders including angling communities, community leaders, NGOs, and key state, federal government and tribal leaders;
  • Work with partners to advocate against installation of a proposed dam in the Chehalis Basin, while working to identify alternatives to flood risk reduction;
  • Support the establishment of long-term outcomes for the Program on the Olympic Peninsula and assist with the development and implementation of the Washington Program’s annual workplan and budget;
  • Identify priorities for policy and management reform on the Olympic Peninsula and promote wild fish conservation through the integration of new and exisiting science into management decision-making;
  • In partnership with the Washington Program Director, engage in state and federal affairs to build understanding of and support for key initiatives;
  • In partnership with the WSC Development team, support fundraising activities to secure funding for the program; and
  • In partnership with the WSC Communications team, develop strategic communications and media plans to support and advance programmatic goals and initiatives.

Key Qualifications

  • Four or more years of professional experience managing restoration projects in wild salmon ecosystems;
  • Understanding of tribal sovereignty, and the co-management of salmonid fisheries in Washington State and the Olympic Peninsula;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills; effective, diplomatic and friendly communication style;
  • Ability to work autonomously and effectively in a remote environment (self-direction is a must);
  • Flexibility to travel (mostly in-region; periodically out-of-state); and
  • Experience working in the Olympic Peninsula.

Education
