Description

Supporting: legal relationship management and legal risk management.

Location: based London City with occasional days to be worked in Dublin.

Salary: Market rate plus benefits.

Company: Mainstream is a leading global renewable energy company with operations throughout North America, South America, South Africa and Europe. Its core business is to develop, build and operate renewable energy plant, both onshore and offshore in collaboration with strategic partners. The culture of the company is fast-paced, dynamic and entrepreneurial, with a strong emphasis on teamwork and innovative thinking.

Role overview: Due to ongoing commercial growth, Mainstream wishes to expand its in-house team by appointing a lawyer with primary responsibility for offshore projects.  The Offshore Projects Lawyer will have at least 5 year’s PQE gained either in a top commercial firm or in a specialist in-house role; though more experienced candidates will be considered.  The Offshore Projects Lawyer will liaise with the offshore team on a day to day basis and will work closely with and report to the Group Head of Legal in Ireland.

Direct responsibilities:

  • Service existing managerial demand for front-line negotiation, drafting and support of key project commercial contracts.
  • Develop and maintain that service and those relationships across Mainstream’s offshore business.
  • Act as a single point of contact on offshore project legal matters.
  • Liaise with the Accounting Department and Group Head of Legal to ensure that project legal costs are costed and planned in detail at the outset of each project, and that agreed project legal budgeting disciplines are adhered to thereafter and that any significant potential legal costs overruns, together with any significant new commercial or management reason therefore, are notified internally early.
  • Liaise with external law firms to obtain prior independent project risk overview at outset and final independent sign off.
  • Identify essential requirements for external legal adviser input and manage the legal spend and service quality provided.

Supporting responsibilities:

  • Participate in the Legal Services Management Team to plan for, and optimise the provision of, legal services to the company generally.
  • Undertake and update legal risk assessments in respect of projects; identifying issues and working with the Group Head of Legal to identify the mitigating action to be taken.
  • Assist with programme of internal and external legal management training, both to managers and to external law firms.
  • Conduct ongoing service review process.
  • Undertake additional legal services-related responsibilities and/or projects as may be assigned by the Group Head of Legal.

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years’ post qualification experience in a blue chip commercial practice or specialist projects in-house setting; more experienced candidates should also apply.
  • Offshore projects experience is essential; offshore renewable experience is desirable.
  • Ability to apply robust commonsense commercial filter to legal risk; clearly differentiating between theoretical and actual legal risks and to reflect such clear priorities succinctly in plain English.
  • Strong commercial mindset (evidence of “extra-curricular” or “time-out” entrepreneurial activities a bonus).
  • Strong interpersonal and proven relationship-building skills – ability to develop and sustain senior management relationships as well as internal relationships across a variety of roles and levels.
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal.
  • Ability to influence change and operate in complex and fast-paced business environments.
  • Ability to interpret and understand key issues from executive to operational level and to translate these into action plans for resolution.
  • Puts the internal customer first; thinks and acts from a wider company perspective.
  • You must be an enthusiastic, pragmatic and down-to-earth lawyer who is able to connect equally well with legal and commercial colleagues throughout the business.

This is an exceptional opportunity to carry out top-quality transactional work and to develop legal management skills while being part of an exciting global business, with a commensurate salary and package.
