OFFSHORE PROJECT ENGINEERING MANAGER

As part of the exponential growth in offshore renewable energy, RES Offshore is expanding its business in the development, engineering, project management, construction and operation and maintenance of offshore renewable energy projects resulting in the need for additional procurement support.

The Role

The Offshore Engineering Team leads the design of Offshore Renewable Energy projects from initial conception through development, procurement, construction and into Operations and Maintenance.  Delivering successful projects from initiation to realisation requires a multidisciplinary development team in which engineering plays a significant role.

Due to increasing workload we are looking to expand the engineering capabilities of the offshore department by recruiting another Project Engineering Manager.  This person is responsible for ensuring the consistent, efficient and safe execution of all engineering activities on an offshore wind farm project and has 2 main functions:

  • Ensuring the adequate support & resourcing to all technical areas of the project
  • Ensuring appropriate technical methods and standards are being followed and that trade-offs between different work packages are balanced

The engineering activities on a project will be carried out by both in-house staff and by contractors.

To perform these functions, the Project Engineering Manager will typically need to do the following:

  • Proactively identify engineering issues and risks to be addressed
  • Reviewing project or package programs to identify and schedule engineering input
  • Calling and holding Design Reviews
  • Presenting  of engineering progress to project team and management
  • Identifying and implementing areas of process improvement
  • Supervision of engineering activities across a range of packages
  • Approval of reports and drawings
  • Review and technical approval of project changes
  • Resolving technical disagreements between different parties, internal and external
  • Coordination of engineering activities to be within quality standards
  • Development and implementation of engineering management procedures
  • Estimating resource requirements and budgets
  • Support package, contract and project managers as requested
  • Support the assessment and procurement of technical equipment and products
  • Ensuring Engineering activities are completed in a safe, timely and to quality manner

The engineering issues to be considered will include:

  • Wind turbines
  • Wind turbine seabed foundations
  • Subsea MV & HV cables
  • Offshore substations: electrical & structural aspects
  • Marine operations
  • Substations up to 400kV with National Grid connection
  • Control and SCADA systems
  • Site investigations and geotechnology
  • Wind farm techno-economics
  • Environmental

The role will require some travel within the UK and Europe.

It is an office-based role but with possible occasional visits to offshore installations and / or working at heights, for which training will be provided as required.

The Person

This role would suit a degree qualified engineer with design and construction experience. Previous experience of the offshore sector and/or knowledge of the wind industry would be strongly advantageous.

The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate that they have the following:

  • Degree or higher qualification in electrical, marine, structural, mechanical or other relevant engineering discipline
  • An ability to appreciate multiple points of view and exercise technical judgement
  • Experience of large construction projects
  • An appreciation of the importance of design control and document management / project governance
  • An understanding of CDM and other relevant legislation
  • An understanding of the "client engineer" role in a multi-contract project environment
  • Familiarity with contractual documents such as scopes of work, functional specifications and technical specifications
  • An understanding of technical and contractual interfaces
  • The ability to select and manage subcontractors and consultants
  • Clear communication skills
  • The ability to prioritise between multiple activities and risks
  • Experience of resource and budgetary management
  • The ability to work alone and part of a large project team
  • A self-starting nature
  • Full lifecycle project experience
  • A current UK driving licence.

The following attributes are desirable:

  • Experience of design, construction, commissioning or operation in the marine or offshore sector, in wind energy or in electrical power industry;
  • Chartered status in a relevant engineering Institution;
  • Contract management experience;
  • Consultancy experience.
