UNPAID INTERNSHIP
WORK TITLE: Oceans Campaigner assistant
ORGANIZATION: Greenpeace Canada
DURATION: ASAP to May 31st (3 months) including 1 month evaluation.
WORK SCHEDULE: 2-3 days a week (15 - 22.5 hours)
LOCATION: Montreal, Qc

JOB DESCRIPTION:

This person chosen will help the oceans campaigner in organizing activities to support the campaign. The intern will have multiple tasks that allow him to develop expertise on general topics such as environmental issues and politics in Quebec but also on more specific issues such as the proposed marine reserves and Greenpeace’s work on sustainable seafood.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

Tuna Ranking

This year’s tuna ranking will be released in April, 2013. To make this happen, a lot of work needs to be done, both internally (research) and externally (launch). The intern’s tasks would include in helping in the creation of the ranking as well as the activities associate with its launch.

School presentations

Greenpeace has a new group of green leaders, who will be presenting at schools about our oceans campaigns, the threats our marine environment is facing and the opportunities to help that exist. The intern will be responsible for helping coordinate the work done by this group of volunteers.

Oceans Social Media

The distribution of information relating to the threats to our ocean ecosystems through social media is crucial to achieve our campaign goals. The intern will be responsible for managing the Twitter and Facebook accounts associated with the oceans campaign.

Project: Open house – Closed streets

In order to create community within the neighbourhood, the Montreal Greenpeace office will have an open-house in May that will coincide with a street festival on Laurier Avenue. The intern will be involved in the organization of this event and its execution.

The tasks mentioned above may change depending on emergency needs and the skills of the intern chosen.

SKILLS / REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken and good knowledge of French
  • Knowledge and easy to use basic software (word, excel and powerpoint) , web searches and social media platforms.
  • General knowledge of environmental issues like climate change, fisheries and ocean biodiversity.
  • Ease of understanding of scientific research and communicating environmental issues.
  • Occasionally available evenings and weekends during specific activities
  • Good interpersonal relation skills
  • Strong commitment to environmental issues
  • Organizational skills and capacity to meet deadlines
  • Be able to work in teams and independently.
  • Share values and understand the tactics of Greenpeace.
