Pew-Conservation International Ocean Alliance
The International Union for Conservation of Nature recommends that countries strongly protect 30% of every habitat by 2030. As of May 2019, 4.8 percent of the world's ocean is safeguarded through some form of marine protected area, or MPA, designation. The rate of protection needs to accelerate in the coming years to ensure a healthy, resilient ocean, safeguard biodiversity, and conserve critical ecosystems. In addition to the designation of new and expanded areas, it is important that existing protected areas have sufficient controls in place to ensure that the desired conservation outcomes are being achieved. This entails strengthening the management of existing reserves and upgrading their protections where needed. Pew seeks to expand these safeguards in part through a proposed partnership to expand and improve ocean conservation efforts. Pew and other prominent conservation organizations and funders will form an alliance to conserve and improve management of the global ocean in new MPAs, upgraded protections, and improved management of existing MPAs.
Position Overview
The senior associate works with the project director, Pew-Conservation International Ocean Alliance and other project staff, as well as key internal partners, to achieve alliance objectives including delivering of technical expertise, capacity, and resources to support large-scale ocean conservation efforts in sites around the world. This position supports the development and execution of site investments, supporting a team of senior officer- and officer-level staff, and coordinating with counterparts in Pew's partnership with Conservation International (CI). Additionally, the senior associate helps to prepare grantee communications and monitors grantee reports.
The position is based in Pew's Washington, DC office, and reports to the project director, Pew-Conservation International Ocean Alliance. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.
Responsibilities
- Assist the project's management, including the project director, senior officer- and officer-level staff, in managing and carrying out the program's objectives through research, material development and outreach to scientists, policy makers and coalition partners.
- Assist in drafting agreements and partner materials, working closely with project leadership and partners at CI.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with leadership at Pew and CI as well as with key programmatic staff and relevant leads in government relations, communications, and conservation science.
- Serve as a point of contact within Pew for the Alliance; build and maintain trusted working relationships with departments including finance, communications, and institutional partnerships.
- In partnership with Alliance staff at Pew and Conservation International, assist in the development and execution of successful clear and focused strategies to meet identified campaign goals in various campaign sites.
- Monitor, analyze and influence new scientific papers, press coverage, regional management recommendations and government policies related to marine protected areas.
- Draft, fact-check and review communications products, as needed by the project and in partnership with the communications department.
- Develop policy statements, papers and advice for the campaign. Review and provide comments on draft policy proposals, regulations and white papers to internal and external audiences as needed in a timely fashion.
- Assist in developing outreach materials for the public, policy makers and media for various active campaign sites. Devise and execute dissemination strategies for campaign policy documents, such as journal submissions, policy briefings, and conferences.
- Represent the project at meetings and events where marine protected area policies will be discussed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
- At least four years of applicable experience in the conservation field, preferably experience working internationally and on large scale initiatives.
- Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew.
- Able to set and achieve short and long-term policy goals in line with program strategy. A task-oriented style, with focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals.
- Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Ability to develop and move existing and new projects forward with a degree of independence and autonomy.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills. Ability to synthesize material and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue and the means to address it, to translate complex scientific information into simpler communications that can influence decision makers and the public. Experience in presenting one's own ideas and diplomatically persuading others as appropriate.
- Ability to communicate with decision makers, scientific advisors, and the general public.
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, scientists, partners and others who contribute to the development of a project by anticipating possible outcomes.
- Ability to work productively with a wide array of different people and institutions that frequently disagree with and are in competition with one another.
- Strong analytic and problem-solving skills, and highly results-oriented.

Travel
The position requires occasional international travel for meetings and conferences.
