Description
IMPORTANT:  This Advertiser has requested that applicants MUST be National Residents / Valid Work Permit-holders.  Other applicants need not apply.

A unique opportunity for a suitably qualified individual to gain a prestigious Office of the Chief Executive (OCE) Postdoctoral Fellowship with CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research (CMAR).  The Postdoctoral Fellow will work on  a research project  detecting  sea-level change and identifying  the underlying processes responsible for such change using state-of-art climate models (that is detection and attribution, D&A), and to understand the regional distribution of sea-level rise.

Specifically you will:

  • Determine the sea level (and ocean) change fingerprint for various climate forcings (particularly greenhouse gases and aerosols) in climate model simulations.
  • Determine the robustness of these fingerprints to natural variability and model formulation.
  • Rigorously compare the simulations with various sea-level and ocean observations to detect and attribute the changes
  • Attempt to constrain projections of global averaged and regional change using the D&A formalism.
  •  Publish results in scientific journals and through seminars and conference presentations

Location: Hobart, Tasmania

Salary: $78K - $85K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure:  3 year term

Ref No: TAS12/03178

To be successful you will have:

  • Demonstrated understanding of the oceans role in climate change and other relevant climate change research issues.
  • Demonstrated experience with computational and statistical methods of climate science and oceanography, in particular the ability to synthesize diverse data sets to aid interpretation and draw conclusions.
  • Capacity to carry out original, independent, and innovative research with a minimum of direct supervision.
  • Sophisticated programming skills to analyse large model data sets and compare them rigorously to observations.
  • Effective communication skills and demonstrated ability to publish research results in both written and oral presentations and an ability to work with colleagues (modelers and observationalists) to help understand ocean and sea-level change.

About CSIRO: Australia is founding its future on science and innovation. Its national science agency, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), is a powerhouse of ideas, technologies and skills for building prosperity, growth, health and sustainability. It serves governments, industries, business and communities.
