The Oak Openings Inter-agency Restoration Crew Leader is a 2-year full-time position funded by a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and will be based at the Kitty Todd Nature Preserve in Swanton, Ohio.  The Crew Leader will focus on developing and implementing strategic invasive plant management and prescribed fire plans aimed at restoring wet prairie and oak savanna habitat.  He or shewill work closely with Conservancy staff and Green Ribbon Initiative partners to facilitate restoration of natural communities on private and public lands across the Oak Openings region of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.  Duties will include invasive species removal (40%), prescribed burning (30%), native seed collection and planting (20%), and miscellaneous other duties as described in the grant agreement (10%).  The Crew Leader is supervised by the Oak Openings Project Manager, will supervise a seasonal restoration crew, and may work with and supervise volunteers.  The position will require regular travel, sometimes overnight, throughout the Oak Openings region.

  • Establish and maintain communication with conservation partners and private landowners to inform them about conservation and restoration opportunities.
  • Work with project staff and partners to develop and implement restoration plans for Oak Openings natural communities.
  • Participate in prescribed fire operations, invasive plant control, and other habitat restoration activities using herbicides and power equipment (e.g. brush cutter, chainsaw, tractor, truck, etc).
  • Coordinate and supervise the work of project field staff.
  • Assist with record keeping and preparation of required grant reporting documents.
  • Maintain tools and equipment.
