NRDC seeks a Publications Director to join our Communications department in New York City. The Publications Director oversees the publications team to plan, develop, and produce authoritatively written and smartly designed publications that communicate NRDC’s substantive scientific findings, policy recommendations, development agenda, and other high-level institutional messages in an accessible way. The Publications Director also works closely with other staff in the Communications department to ensure that content developed for NRDC publications is distributed across NRDC’s many communications channels.

Essential Functions:
  • Work with staff authors to plan, budget, schedule, edit, and produce research-based papers, fact sheets, brochures, and other collateral materials.
  • Manage publications department staff, budget, and team of freelance editors and designers.
  • Oversee all aspects of publications production, including soliciting estimates from designers and printers, working with them and authors to meet budget and deadline constraints, contracting with all necessary vendors and freelancers, reviewing and editing copy, organizing production, and coordinating with website staff to prepare web-based presentation of publications.
  • Oversee development and maintenance of the NRDC Policy Solutions website (the online policy think tank and library for the institution), including ensuring that publications are made available online in a timely manner, that features are kept fresh, and that the online presentation of our policy work reflects the institution’s priorities and goals.
  • Develop contacts with freelance consultants in the areas of design, desktop production, editing, illustration, and photography.
  • Produce NRDC’s annual report, including working with NRDC management and designers to develop content and design, assigning writing; overseeing editing, copy, and photo approval, and supervising production.
  • Oversee all managerial and administrative tasks related to reprint and copyright registration and permission as appropriate.
  • Work with Communications staff to ensure adequate photo resources are available to the institution.
  • Oversee marketing and outreach to expanded audience for NRDC policy publications, including working with authors to identify individuals, organizations, and communities we seek to reach.
  • Participate in weekly communications cross-departmental editorial operations meetings.
  • Work directly with the Communications Director and Deputy Director on special department initiatives as needed.
Requirements:

  • At least seven years’ experience writing/editing research reports (or equivalent academic background) in the area of policy, science, and/or environmental issues.

  • Strong organizational skills and project management capabilities.

  • Ability to work well under deadline pressures, exhibit diplomacy—and authority—when dealing with authors, and be flexible in a dynamic position that requires an eye for minute details as well as the ability to coordinate larger projects.

  • Print and online production experience is highly desirable. In its absence, interest and ability to learn these skills essential.

  • Advanced proficiency using Microsoft Office suite, Mac skills, and working knowledge of Adobe programs are preferred; design sense is essential.

  • Tight production deadlines may occasionally require working evening and/or weekend hours.
