The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit global environmental organization with more than 1.3 million members and online activists.
Position Summary:The Director manages the Center for Market Innovation (CMI) including setting strategic priorities; mentoring and reviewing staff; interfacing with NRDC initiatives and leadership; and fundraising. The CMI engages the private sector to design and advocate for market-based policies and private sector market transformation initiatives that redirect capital toward sustainable practices, with a current focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy and other global warming solutions. Over time, the CMI scope will expand to cover other critical environmental challenges including clean water and healthy oceans.
Manage a dozen professional staff with deep expertise and business experience ranging from finance to renewables and efficiency
Collaborate with NRDC’s Energy and Climate programs to build on the Cap 2.0 project (www.nrdc.org/Cap2.0) – an economic analysis of various climate policy design strategies – to advocate for well-designed climate policy that earns strong business sector support
Lead a team in designing and advocating for public policy and capital markets innovations that encourage rapid scale up of investment in energy efficiency and low-carbon energy supply both domestically and internationally
Drive CMI’s outreach and negotiations with the financial sector on a range of climate and energy market transformation initiatives such as energy efficient and location efficient lending and carbon indices
Contribute to senior NRDC institutional forums including the Policy Committee, the Corporate Relations Committee, and overall strategic planning
Represent CMI and NRDC at external business and policy meetings and events
Support on-going high-level fundraising efforts for the Center for Market Innovation as well as broader NRDC institutional needs
Manage NRDC’s programmatic relationship with Environmental Entrepreneurs, a national community of individual business leaders that work with NRDC to advocate for good environmental policy while building economic prosperity. (www.e2.org)

Skills and Knowledge Requirements:The ideal candidate will have the personal and professional skills to advance the Center’s objectives, including:
10+ years of business and policy experience in top-tier management consulting, the financial sector, or operational level experience in other relevant industries
Advanced degree in business, economics, public policy, public administration, or related field or the equivalent
Demonstrated experience in strategic thinking and driving implementation of collaborative projects
Demonstrated excellence in managing a diverse team of professionals
Superior communication skills, including proven success engaging with a broad range of stakeholders in both the public and private sectors
Knowledge of environmental issues and markets and climate policy preferred
