Nutrient Hydrochemist – Water Quality Processes Group
Based at Wallingford, Oxfordshire
Salary: £19,740 - £23,390 per annum (Band 7)
Fixed Term Appointment for 12 months

Role Overview

CEH’s Water Quality Processes Group has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Environmental Scientist to support a number of major river-catchment scale projects.  You will be required to work as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team, collecting samples in the field and processing water samples in the laboratory for a wide range of chemical and biological parameters.  You will be required to run and maintain nutrient analysers and water quality probes, and to interpret the high-frequency water quality data they produce. You will also assist with the running of nutrient enrichment experiments in rivers across the UK, which investigate how changing nutrient status affects algal growth and community structure.  There will be opportunities to contribute to reports and research papers. Although this role is a 12 month Fixed Term Appointment, there may be opportunities to develop a career within CEH for the right person.

 

Skills/Qualifications Required

You will have:

  • A good degree ideally in Chemistry or the Environmental sciences (other areas will be considered i.e. degrees in biology or geographical science), or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong fieldwork and laboratory skills/experience,
  • Excellent numeracy and data handling skills are required.
  • Previous laboratory and fieldwork experience are essential. 
  • Solid team-working and organizational skills, including an ability to communicate effectively with a range of specialists and non-specialists. 
  • Effective problem solving skills, the ability to work in a range of weather/terrains and a driving license are essential because much of the role will involve working independently in the field.
