Description of the job

The role/team

It’s crucial that we protect the environment through the safe management and disposal of waste from the past half century of nuclear operations. That’s why we established the Nuclear Waste Assessment Team (NWAT), which has played an increasingly significant role especially since the creation of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. You’ll be providing specialist technical support as part of our regulatory assessment capability, and expert advice to our Nuclear Regulation Groups and diverse internal and external bodies. Other main aspects include:

• Assess proposals for disposal facilities and for managing higher activity wastes

• Influence radioactive waste management policy development

• Represent the Environment Agency to the public, the media and other regulators

Experience/skills required
You’ll need:

• technical expertise in nuclear waste management and disposal;

• experience as a technical consultant or with a nuclear operator;

• a science/engineering degree;

• a talent for communicating to both expert and non-technical audiences.

With nuclear waste management issues very much to the fore, we have a crucial role to play and so will you. There are great benefits too, including a final salary pension scheme, flexible working, family friendly policies and generous holidays.
