Job Title: Nuclear Campaigner Position reports to: Climate and Energy Project Director Position Location: Washington, DC Friends of the Earth U.S. is fighting to defend the environment and create a more healthy and just world. We’re part of Friends of the Earth International, a federation of groups working in 76 countries on today’s most urgent environmental and social issues. In accomplishing our mission, Friends of the Earth is working at the nexus of environmental protection, economic policy and social justice to fundamentally transform the way our country and the world values people and the environment. We are focused on reforming economic drivers such as tax or trade policy that are often used to empower corporations and government to harm the environment. For forty years, Friends of the Earth has been a leading voice in the U.S. in opposing nuclear power. In the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, it is clear that there can and must be a thorough debate on the future of nuclear power and the need to move beyond this dangerous and dirty technology to the clean renewable and efficiency technologies of the 21st century. We are seeking to hire a talented and dedicated individual to augment our efforts to educate the public about the dangers of and need to turn away from nuclear power and deal with our devastating nuclear waste problem. S/he will:
Requirements and Special Knowledge The position requires a college degree (BA/BS) or equivalent, a demonstrated commitment to the environment, an appreciation of Friends of the Earth’s role in the environmental movement and knowledge of nuclear, energy and/or climate change policy. Some experience in policy advocacy, or on nuclear issues at the federal or state level is strongly preferred. Knowledge and experience with the legislative process is also preferred. The ideal candidate will have a strategic approach to both policy and politics, and a desire to have a major impact on federal policy debates through hard-hitting advocacy. The successful candidate will have the ability to balance and successfully complete a wide range of campaign activities including advocacy, convening/organizing, policy development, and research, as well as the ability to oversee consultants, and coordinate media and development staff. The successful candidate will have the ability to work in coordination with a dedicated and passionate team of domestic staff as well as with a diverse group of coalition partners. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. Salary This position offers a competitive salary, commensurate with experience.
