POSITION SUMMARY
The Stewardship & Ecological Field Assistant is responsible for stewardship and management support of the Conservancy’s preserves and conservation easements in northern New Hampshire.  The position will be based in the Conservancy’s North Conway office, and will focus on the Mount Washington Valley and Northern Forest project areas.  The Stewardship & Ecological Field Assistant will be responsible for monitoring of preserves, equipment maintenance and organization, and biological monitoring and inventory. Specific duties are expected to include trail and property boundary line maintenance, limited trail construction projects, installation & upkeep of preserve signage, invasive species management, stocking and maintaining informational kiosks, supporting prescribed burns at the Ossipee Pine Barrens, coordinating and leading volunteers, collecting and organizing field data for ecological monitoring, rare plant species monitoring, trash removal at selected locations, and interacting cordially and respectfully with the general public while working on preserves. 

The Stewardship & Ecological Field Assistant will be supervised by the Northern New Hampshire Land Steward, and will coordinate and work closely with the Mount Washington Valley Program Manager.   

Anticipated time period for this position is MAY - OCTOBER 2009.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Stewardship & Ecological Field Assistant participates in preserve monitoring, maintenance and management.  This may include one or more of the following functions:
• Monitor and maintain hiking trails and preserve boundaries.
• Assist with the monitoring of conservation easements and preparation of reports.
• Assist w/preparation of conservation easement baseline reports as circumstances may require.
• Support prescribed burning and other ecological management activities
• Maintain preserve signage and kiosk structures
• Utilize, maintain, and organize tools and equipment.
• Engage in invasive species control efforts.
• Assist with volunteer coordination and volunteer trail workdays.
• Assist with data collection related to ecological monitoring and inventory.
• Document work accomplished
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• High school diploma and 1-2 years training in science-related field or related experience in land management.  Preference given to candidates with a college degree in natural resources, wildlife biology, ecology, forestry, or related discipline.
• Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.  Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management activities.
• Expertise in the safe and efficient operation of various types of equipment (motor vehicles, GPS, chainsaw, brush saw, assortment of hand-tools, etc)
• Ability to follow instructions, contribute to a positive working environment, work cooperatively with colleagues, and share a commitment to the mission of The Nature Conservancy.
• Ability and motivation to perform demanding hands-on physical work, sometime under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.
• Experience of efficiently working alone without direct supervision; including ability to independently problem solve.
• Ability to read and interpret maps and orient oneself in the outdoors.
• Desirable: Basic firefighter training (S130/S190); preferably red card certified
• Desirable: First aid and CPR certifications
• Desirable:  PC familiarity, including database knowledge and GIS in order to maintain preserve records.

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers. 

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

• May work under close supervision or infrequent supervision depending on individual circumstances.
• Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including other staff or volunteers.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
• Friendly disposition including the ability to interact well with preserve visitors and to convey basic preserve information including the possibility of leading interpretative preserve field trips.
• Ability to communicate and function productively as a member of the TNC work team.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
• The Stewardship and Ecological Field Assistant may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.  These conditions often:
? require considerable physical exertion;
? present the possibility of injury and the need to operate in a safe manner, and
? require working long hours, frequently alone, at times in isolated settings.
• Must be flexible with working schedule including a willingness to work some Saturdays as well as occasional extended days and overnights.
