Position Summary

The SVP, Northern Division Director is responsible for guiding the overall direction and general management of the Northern Division. This position is responsible for managing all aspects of division operations including oversight for strategic planning, financial performance, philanthropic activities, and staff management. He/She serves as an inspirational manager who motivates staff to achieve and sustain excellence, and collaboratively establishes a strategic vision for long range and day-to-day project and program initiatives.

The Northern Division consists of Offices and/or programs covering the following states:  Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

This position can be located at any of the following TPL offices: New York, Boston, Washington D.C, Chicago or St. Paul.

Essential Functions

  • Ensures each state is delivering work in support of TPL’s mission in a financially sustainable way.
  • Working with the State Directors and their volunteer boards/councils, develops strategic plans for each Office.
  • Coordinates the management of the delivery of national organization support services so that operational needs are met.
  • Ensures a high level of coordination and collaboration within the division.
  • Serves as member of the COO’s leadership team in the field.
  • Working with the Division Philanthropy Director, ensures organizational philanthropic goals and objectives are met by the State Offices.
  • Manages workforce issues, including resource allocation, performance management, training needs, recruitment and retention.
  • Ensures volunteer councils/boards are well managed, and maintains a working relationship with the state advisory board chairs.

 Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field.  Master's degree or JD preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of managerial experience.  Knowledge and experience in organizational management principles and practices required.  
  • Experience in the environmental movement, land conservation or the public use of urban lands preferred.
  • Experience in managing geographically dispersed locations and/or regional or divisional level managerial experience preferred.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated leadership skills in creating and managing diverse teams of professionals, including experience with strategic planning and developing, directing and managing multiple projects.
  • Successful experience in partnership development (agency partners, community, government, etc) including extensive networking with high-level conservation contacts; political astuteness.
  • Philanthropic experience and experience working with volunteers, including experience obtaining funds from public and private non-profit sources.
  • Proven interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.  Candidates should have public speaking ability for formal as well as impromptu presentations to a broad public as well as excellent writing skills.
  • He/She should be able to develop strong rapport and have the ability to work with the volunteer boards/councils, as well as with a diverse staff and community.
  • The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, a collaborative work style, self-initiative, a good sense of humor, a high energy level, and a sincere dedication to the mission and philosophy of TPL.
  • Willingness to travel extensively required.
