Description
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is looking for two independent, part-time, non-executive Directors to join the BAS Board. The Board supports the Director, Professor Nicholas Owens in managing BAS and providing advice to the NERC Executive Board. BAS employs over 450 staff and operates three stations in the Antarctic and two stations on South Georgia. The Antarctic operations (including two ships and five aircraft) and science programmes are executed and managed from Cambridge and rely on a wide-ranging team of professional staff.

Working with the Director, Deputy Director and the other six Board members, your role will be to constructively challenge BAS’s thinking about business matters, to ensure that appropriate monitoring and evaluation of BAS’s decisions is undertaken and to bring your wider experience to bear in discussions on strategic, operational and change management issues.

Ideally with experience of senior management in a large, complex organisation and a strong interest or background in environmental issues or other sciences, you will be able to demonstrate that you have integrity and high ethical standards, sound judgement, the ability and willingness to challenge previously accepted thinking and strong interpersonal skills.

In return, we offer a remuneration package of £3.5k per annum for up to 16 days work together with reasonable travel and subsistence costs for attendance at the BAS Board meetings and other Board workshops each year. Additionally, there will be an early opportunity to visit a BAS Research Station in Antarctica to understand at first hand the complexity of and challenges for our organisation. In order to undertake this business visit successful candidates need to be medically fit and capable of working in Antarctic conditions.

For further information about BAS and details of how to apply, please visit our website at www.antarctica.ac.uk .Wider information about the Natural Environment Research Council may be found at www.nerc.ac.uk.

Duration: The appointment is for a three year period, reviewed initially after one year. The maximum period of service by mutual consent is five years.

Salary: £3.5k per annum for up to 16 days work together with reasonable travel and subsistence costs for attendance at the BAS Board meetings and other Board workshops each year.

If you have further questions about the role of the independent non executive BAS board members please contact Fiona Brazil, BAS Head of Personnel, on 01223 221400 /1456 or e-mail fibra@bas.ac.uk.

The closing date for receipt of documentation is Friday 30th May 2008.

Further discussions with candidates who best meet our criteria will be held at BAS offices in Cambridge in July/August..
