POSITION SUMMARY

The Northern New York Conservation Lands Manager is responsible for the implementation of various conservation strategies in the NNY field area, including ecological restoration, recreational management, community relations, and sustainable forest management.  This position will help develop and implement conservation and restoration projects within the Tug Hill and Eastern Lake Ontario conservation area which may include the restoration and decommissioning of historic logging roads, future modeling of forest conditions through silvicultural practices and targeted forest management demonstration projects.  

In addition, the NNY Conservation Lands Manager also is responsible for managing the Chapter’s portfolio of Northern NY preserves at places such as Eastern Lake Ontario, Rome Sand Plains, Lake Julia, and the alvar limestone barrens. This includes maintaining trails, boundaries and other structural improvements, and annually conducting conservation easement monitoring.  This position also interfaces with local community members on Tug Hill and in other jurisdictions where necessary to build awareness of TNC’s priorities and understand local aspirations.

S/he will work with multi-disciplinary teams including science, ecological management, protection, government relations, philanthropy, and marketing staff to accomplish these and other objectives.  Externally, the position may work closely with non-industrial private forestland owners, hunt clubs, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation staff, local officials, NGOs, and members of the public. This position will be supervised by the Director of Ecological Management and may supervise seasonal staff and interns. The Conservation Lands Manager also must be comfortable working alone in remote settings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The NNY Conservation Lands Manager participates in preserve operations including their  maintenance, and the management, development and coordination of conservation programs.  This may include one or more of the following functions:

  • Leads work teams and supervises seasonal staff
  • Furthers the Conservancy’s strategic goals
  • Coordinates community support
  • Manages public grant components and may develop funding proposals.
  • Implements  preserve management plans
  • Maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public
  • Conducts effectiveness monitoring and other species, natural community assessments
  • Maintains tools and equipment
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • BA/BS in science-related field and 1 year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience with natural systems.
  • Experience in ecological land management principles.
  • Experience performing physical work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1 – 2 years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required in order to complete preserve management activities.
  • Familiarity of forest restoration and silvicultural practices. 
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation
  • Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
  • Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers). 
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages
  • Safe use of maintenance tools; including lawn mowers, power tools and construction tools

 AUTO SAFETY POLICY

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:

  • require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present frequent possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings
  • may be require to travel and work weekends.
