These conservation professionals ensure that TU is at the forefront of fisheries restoration and protection work at the local, state and national levels. Our mission is to conserve, protect and restore North America's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. Our vision is by the next generation, TU will ensure that robust populations of native and wild coldwater fish once again thrive within their North American range, so that our children can enjoy healthy fisheries in their home waters.

In the West, intact fish and game habitat translates directly into quality hunting and fishing. TU's Sportsmen's Conservation Project (SCP) works to protect intact landscapes from threats that would degrade quality habitat and put in jeopardy our irreplaceable hunting and fishing heritage.

Position Summary

We are seeking a coordinator in New Mexico to join the SCP, a TU program with approximately 25 staff members located throughout the West. The coordinator will work closely with sportsmen and women, public land managers, tribes and other traditional land users to protect and restore high-quality trout habitat on public land in a manner supported by local communities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the SCP's Southwest Region team, and report to the Southwest Regional Director.
  • Manage campaigns to both protect and restore high-quality trout habitat on public land.
  • Educate, organize and mobilize fellow anglers and hunters to achieve conservation goals.
  • Achieve durable conservation outcomes by working with a diverse range of interests.
  • Build relationships with the TU New Mexico State Council and chapters.

Qualifications

  • Professional experience in natural resource management or conservation; specific experience with federal land management throughout New Mexico is a big plus
  • A thorough understanding of New Mexico's diverse communities and cultures, including political and economic conditions and the region's diverse fishing and hunting tradition
  • Passion for protecting fish and wildlife habitat and angling and hunting opportunities; ability to relate to anglers and hunters
  • Knowledge of New Mexico's native trout, their habitat and threats to these species
  • Demonstrated team-building skills and a passion for organizing people to achieve a common goal; issue campaign experience a big plus
  • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with diverse, multicultural interests to solve problems
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong team ethic
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout New Mexico and occasionally to Washington D.C. and other locations
  • Lobbying experience in the New Mexico legislative arena a plus
  • Media experience a plus
