New Jersey Crew Leader

You can make a difference this summer! Here’s your chance to be part of a program that promotes youth leadership and conservation! The Student Conservation Association is a dynamic, nonprofit national organization which encourages and supports youth in service to the environment. The SCA is currently accepting applications for 1 Crew Leader position with our 2011 New Jersey Community Program working on Trails within the Essex County Parks and Recreation department.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Co-lead, mentor and coach a crew of 10 students, ages 15-18 from Newark and Essex County while completing various conservation service projects designed to build an ethic of community and environmental stewardship. Projects include trail construction and maintenance.
• Lead and manage work outcomes and crew dynamics
• Actively manage project & member risk to maintain a safe work environment
• Plan for and carry out Environmental Education & Green Job Readiness curriculum
• Supervise the skills training & safe tool use of high school crew members
• Manage the quality & technique of work performed
• Promote leadership development within team
• Manage relationship with agency partner
• Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics
• Ensure successful and timely completion of work project
• Communicate with SCA field support staff as required
• Complete required program reporting and documentation
• Manage vehicles, equipment and any necessary purchasing for crew and project
• Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures

Qualifications:

• Minimum 21 years of age
• Possess High School diploma, Bachelors degree preferred
• Experience teaching or working with urban youth in outdoor setting
• Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards or reliable method of transportation required
• Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards and medical screening
• Possess current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain
• Must attend SCA Crew Leader Orientation Training
• Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
• Knowledge and experience with a variety of hand tools
• Hike and work in a variety of weather conditions

Program Dates: July 11th-August 12th
Mandatory Training Dates: May 19th-May 27th (alternate dates available)

Compensation: up to $3000 total salary depending on experience & crew length.
