Description

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation
science and applied conservation, working in over 50 countries around the world.

We are seeking an experienced Project Co-ordinator to support the expansion of an innovative and ambitious cross-sectoral initiative called Net-Works. Net-Works is the result of a collaboration between ZSL and global carpet tile manufacturer Interface, Inc. Disused fishing nets, which are made from the same material used to make carpet yarn and can persist for centuries, are collected through a community-based supply chain and regenerated into raw material by Aquafil so that they can be incorporated into products such as Interface’s carpet tiles, helping to bring Interface closer to their goal of closed-loop manufacturing and ambitious sustainability targets. Communities get the best possible price for the nets and in doing so are encouraged to clean up coasts and waters where discarded fishing nets take a negative toll on the environment and marine life. This gives poor communities an opportunity to earn additional income and become part of a global recycling chain. Net-Works has been successfully piloted in the Philippines for one year, and we now seek to expand and replicate the model both within the Philippines, where it will also link to our existing mangrove and marine conservation initiatives and to ongoing relief efforts following earthquakes and Typhoon Haiyan, and to other countries. For more information on Net-Works visit www.zsl.org/net-works and view the online videos on http://ow.ly/rCPnj and http://ow.ly/rCPAz.

The post holder will work with the Marine & Freshwater International team to support the expansion of Net-Works. Key duties include the development and management of a toolkit to support other organisations in the replication of this model. In addition, the post holder will support the maintenance of a database for M&E and the implementation of Net-Works.

Candidates should have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, with a proven ability to produce high quality toolkits, both online and print form, for use by a range of stakeholders. The candidate should have excellent and proven data management, administrative and coordinating skills, 3-5 years experience in a practical role in the conservation or development sector, and a post-graduate degree in conservation- or education-related subject.

The position will be based at ZSL’s main Conservation Programmes offices in London, but will be expected to spend around 4 months per year Net-Works sites. The post-holder will have a fixed term ZSL contract for 3 years dependent on performance, and the post is available immediately. Salary is dependent on experience but in the range of £24,485 - £29,864 p.a.

Applicants should send their CV and a covering letter, detailing relevant experience and skills and including a possible start date, by email to ZSL’s HR Department (hr@zsl.org) by Friday 10th January 2014.

The Zoological Society of London is a charity registered in England and Wales: no. 208728
