Located at the Ducks Unlimited Greenwing Legacy Interpretive Centre within the Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park and reporting to the Communications Coordinator - Atlantic Canada, the Nature Interpreter is responsible for the daily delivery and maintenance of high quality visitor services, public education, and school programs based on the resources and themes of wetland education. The Nature Interpreter communicates effectively with people of all ages about the Greenwing Legacy Interpretive Centre, its education programs and interpretive displays, wetland species and ecology, management techniques and conservation, and organizes or assists with special projects and events. Activities include:

  • Traveling to various wetland sites to deliver outdoor, field experience programs
  • Liaising with wetland sites, program participants and Atlantic Education Specialist
  • Booking programs, confirmation and invoicing
  • Assisting DUC staff and Education Program Coordinator with other environmental education programs, conferences and volunteer workshops and completing a final report

This position is funded through the Province of Nova Scotia’s Student Career Skills Development Program. To be eligible, a student must be attending one of the following:

  • A post-secondary institution and returning to the same institution in the Fall of the current year
  • A post-secondary institution and transferring to another in the Fall of the current year
  • A Grade 12 graduate who will be attending post-secondary institution in the Fall of the current year

Details:

  • Expected term of employment is 14 weeks, beginning May 1, 2012
  • Salary is $12.00/hr based on a 35-hour week
  • Some travel will be required

Qualifications:

  • Possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle
  • Have experience working with youth and delivering youth programs
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • Enthusiasm for the outdoors, wildlife and environmental conservation
  • Energetic and love working with children and the public
  • Knowledge of wildlife/wetland biology (or equivalent experience) an asset
  • Valid first aid training an asset
