This short-term, summer position is responsible for the stewardship and protection of two shoreline preserves in Old Lyme, Connecticut: Griswold Point (closed to the public during bird nesting season) and Hatchett's Point (easement property managed by the Conservancy).  Good communication skills essential.  Position will begin in mid-April (or when filled) and end the week following Labor Day.  The preserves contain nesting pairs of Piping Plovers, federally threatened birds, and Least Terns, state threatened.

DUTIESOF THIS POSITION:

1. Survey and monitor nesting piping plovers and least terns.
2. Maintain fences, signs, and remove litter.
3. Promote good public relations for the preserves and The Nature Conservancy with members of the general public and the local community.
4. Develop a thorough knowledge of the preserves, their flora, and fauna and be able to convey this to the public.
5. Provide on-site presence to discourage unauthorized and destructive use of preserves.
6. Work up to 35 hours per week, including all weekends and holidays.
7. Work with and coordinate local volunteers when assistance is available.
8. Cooperate with State DEP staff responsible for statewide plover and tern management.
9. Assist, as needed, with invasive species removal and site restoration.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
• Bachelor's degree (or progress toward) in a natural resource field.
• Experience with bird observation and behavior preferable.
• Ability to keep accurate and timely records of observations.
• Ability to work effectively with volunteers and public.
• Experience or ability to safely use basic maintenance tools.
• Ability to follow instructions.
• Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.
