The MWI Naturalist is responsible, in coordination with the Senior Naturalist, Programs and Facility Managers, for providing high quality, well organized, four season recreation trips, experiential courses and educational opportunities at all MWI Lodges. The MWI Naturalist is a host for the AMC and leads the support of AMC activities and programs, both at the AMC destinations and in the community. The MWI Naturalist is responsible for the quality, safety and organization of programs and activities with a specific focus on daily programs and recreational activities to increase the quality of the total guest experience. The MWI Naturalist lives on site as needed in quarters provided by the AMC. Priorities include development, implementation, and administration of high quality active and passive recreation trips, experiential courses and educational opportunities to instruct and enlighten visitors and guests at the AMC's MWI backcountry destinations. This is a year round, exempt salaried position with excellent benefits. Goals and specific objectives are developed annually based on short and long range goals for MWI. Performance, in relation to goals and objectives, is evaluated periodically during the year. 

Responsibilities 
In collaboration with Sr. Naturalist, Programs and Facility Managers:
  • Instruct, deliver and support dynamic interpretive programs delivered enthusiastically throughout the year that focus on local natural and cultural history, backcountry safety and education themes.
  • Plan and lead recreational programs, instruction and outings both at the facilities and on surrounding lands during all seasons and conditions.
  • Work with other appropriate staff to create a dynamic active and passive educational program in the MWI Lodges to simultaneously enhance visitor enjoyment and commitment to AMC’s mission.
  • Provide periodic backup support and coverage to Facilities operations and management as requested by the Operations and Facilities Managers.
  • Provide excellent customer services to all visitors to the MWI Lodges and specifically to the guests attending the programs.
  • Collect feedback from all program participants and lodge guests to use as a tool to improve MWI guest services.
  • Work collaboratively with other AMC departments and outside partnerships to design and deliver programming and educational outreach according to AMC’s high program standards.
  • Conduct interpretive outreach efforts as assigned for club events, professional conferences, and local schools, organizations, and groups.
  • Attend off-site meetings as needed and schedules permit.
  • Understand and comply with all AMC and MWI policies and procedures in relation to the position.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Employment Qualifications

  • Four-year degree in Natural Resources Management, Natural History, Environmental Education or other related field is preferred, and/or 2-5 years equivalent program, recreational and hospitality experience.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and the ability to deliver effective programs and interact with a variety of people in an outgoing, friendly and positive manner.
  • Ability to be a solid team contributor, while also working alone at times.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the AMC MWI property and surrounding 100 Mile Wilderness areas.
  • Ability to complete a diverse variety of work tasks in a non-conventional work schedule.
  • Ability to fly fish, hike, bike, paddle, ski, snowshoe and perform other related outdoor recreation skills and instruct others in these activities.
  • Ability to train staff in outdoor leadership and hard skills, and manage associated equipment.
  • Ability to perform work in a remote camp setting and travel safely in the backcountry in all weather conditions, carrying up to 40 lbs of gear.
  • Commitment to the Conservation – Education - Recreation mission of the AMC.
  • Valid Wilderness First Responder certification or the ability to obtain.
  • Valid Maine driver's license with clear driving history.
  • Maine Guide registration or ability to obtain is highlydesirable.
  • Ability to use a computer to send and receive email, and create Microsoft Word and Excel documents.
  • AMC has zero tolerance for the endangerment of children.
All AMC staff working in a facility where children are present will undergo an annual criminal history background check.
