- EDF’s US Climate and Energy Program consists of multiple issues with varying socio-economic and political elements. The main issues we are currently working on, but not limited to, include natural gas and fossil fuels, smart grid, alternative energy, energy efficiency, and the communications elements of those topics. We also work in different states with different local constituencies, policies, networks, and service providers. Our overall goal is to reduce emissions and help advance the clean energy revolution.
Reports to Senior Policy Advisor Overall Function Under the direction of the Senior Policy Advisor, the intern will conduct research on various segments of the energy industry, focusing heavily on law and policy relevant to EDF’s Natural Gas Campaign. The intern will be specifically utilized by the legal and policy team members addressing the growing number of water and waste issues associated with hydraulic fracturing and shale gas production. Given the nationwide scope of EDF’s Natural Gas Campaign, the intern will be responsible for investigating and examining current and proposed state and federal regulations and policies with and eye towards developing a comprehensive, comparative understanding of the best industry and regulatory practices available to address EDF’s environmental concerns. Key Responsibilities
- Tracking news and policy updates regarding natural gas regulatory developments in key states
- Researching state and federal regulations, statutes, and policies relating to issues of pressing concern, including CWA, SDWA, RCRA, and other similar statutes
- Assisting in drafting and editing comments and other documents in response to proposed rules or similar state and federal administrative actions concerning the natural gas industry
- Participating in relevant calls, meetings, hearings, and other presentations involving a broad range of stakeholders
- Performing other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Enrolled in college or university or recently graduated from such institution; preferred background in environmental science, law, or policy with relevant experience relating to the energy industry; J.D. preferred
- Demonstrated interest in non-profit advocacy and environmental protection
- Working knowledge of law, policy, and current affairs regarding the environmental aspects of the U.S. energy industry, specifically the natural gas industry, including knowledge of state and federal environmental statutes and agencies (preferred)
- Excellent writing, research, and communication skills required
- Must be well-organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented
- Proficient in the use of relevant MS Office software
Location Austin, Texas Term 10 weeks, or more Hours Hours can vary Compensation This is an unpaid, volunteer internship. Students are encouraged to seek academic credit through their college/university and EDF will ensure that any and all paperwork needed to secure academic credit is completed.
