Purpose and General Description:

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) protects critical natural areas of ecological importance through land securement and stewardship. NCC Saskatchewan has identified 8 Natural Areas – Cypress Uplands, East Parklands, Missouri Coteau, Moose Mountain, Milk River Basin, Saskatoon Prairie, Upper Qu’Appelle and West Parklands to focus our conservation work. NCC Saskatchewan is responsible for the stewardship of over 150,000 acres of habitat, including 180 Conservation Agreements and 75 properties that we own.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the NCC – Saskatchewan Natural Areas Managers with Documentation in all Natural Areas:
    • Baseline Documentation Reports for Conservation Agreements;
    • Baseline Inventory Reports for NCC owned properties;
    • Property Management Plans for NCC owned properties; and
    • Enter current and historic data (e.g. photographs, species lists, anthropogenic features, management plans, etc.) into NCC’s Land Information System (LIS).
  • LIS Data Entry Support for Conservation Operations Staff.
  • Verify and standardize vegetation community types and anthropogenic features previously mapped in a GIS database for NCC conservation lands.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Supervision:

Direct supervision will be provided by the Natural Areas Managers.

Required Skills and Attributes:

  • University or College graduate from a Natural Sciences Program; with a focus on biology, ecology, environmental studies or closely related field.
  • Knowledge of vegetation community types: prairie, forest and wetland ecology and ability to monitor ecological health;
  • Experience in designing, implementing, analyzing and reporting on the effectiveness of land management/stewardship activities;
  • Experience in collecting, organizing and analyzing natural resource data;
  • Experience in developing technical reports, scientific papers, monitoring protocols and presentations
  • Proficient in computer usage, including data entry, statistical analysis, Internet and MS Office applications.
  • Experience with ESRI GIS software;
  • Experience with NCC’s LIS database is a definite asset;
  • Analytical, and detail orientated, creative, proactive thinker;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently (with attention to detail), seek assistance and input as required, and to work on interdisciplinary teams;
  • Self-motivate, superior time management skills, ability to work to meet deadlines;
  • Supervisory and project management experience are preferred;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and technical writing skills;
  • Strong interest in the environmental field and the vision and mission of NCC;
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence; and
  • Able to work under adverse climatic conditions

Terms of Employment

  • This is a 16 week position starting in May, with possibility for extension. Salary is $16/hour (based on a 5 day, 35 hr work week).
  • Positions are based in Regina or other suitable location, and require the ability to travel throughout southern Saskatchewan. Extended overnight stays may be required. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
