BACKGROUND
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a union of government and civil society members. It provides public, private and non-governmental organizations with the knowledge and tools to ensure that human progress, economic development and nature conservation are achieved in harmony. Founded in 1948, IUCN has grown over the years to become the world's largest and most diverse environmental network. It brings together the experience, resources and strength of its 1,300 Member organizations and the expertise of more than 13,000 experts. Our experts are divided into six Commissions, dedicated to species conservation, environmental law, protected areas, economic and social policy, ecosystem management, and education and communication.

In order to strengthen its interventions, IUCN in collaboration with its partners WUSC, CECI, CIFOR-ICRAF, etc. have initiated the project titled "Nature-Based Climate adaptation in the Guinean forests of West Africa" financed by Global Affairs Canada (GAC). The project intervenes in Guinean forest ecosystems in Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana with the ultimate objective of improving the adoption of gender-sensitive and inclusive nature-based solutions (NBS) for climate change adaptation (CCA) of communities' livelihoods and biodiversity.

In this context, IUCN wishes to recruit a National Project Coordinator who will double as the IUCN Regional Coordinator for the project. The National/ Regional Project Coordinator will be based in Ghana to supervise and provide technical support in the planning and implementation of nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation of livelihoods and biodiversity in the three countries. Under the responsibility of the National Project Coordinator is also to ensure the full implementation of the project in the project landscapes in Ghana with the Partners. He/She will ensure the identification and implementation of standards for nature-based solutions for community and ecosystem adaptation to climate change. He/she will be responsible for coordinating reports from IUCN in the three countries to the donor.
JOB DESCRIPTION
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

The National Project Coordinator will be placed under the direct supervision of the Head of Forest Program based in Cameroon. He/she will double as the IUCN Regional Coordinator for the project and will be responsible for the overall supervision of the project in Ghana, Guinea and Cote D’Ivoire.

a) Specific Responsabilities and Tasks

1. Regional Project Coordination
- Coordinate and supervise the project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation in the three countries
- Consolidate IUCN’s reports in the three countries for reporting to WUSC Senior Regional Coordinator
- Develop tools and templates for planning, reporting and monitoring of the project in the three countries
- Represent IUCN at national and international events
- Organise regular coordination meeting for IUCN project team and partners in the three countries to discuss progress of implementation
- Collaborate with the project team to secure more opportunities to build on the project

2. National Project Coordination

2a. Planning and implementation of the project in Ghana
- Facilitate the development of work plans and budget for implementation in Ghana
- Supervise and coordinate the development and implementation of all project activities in targeted landscapes in Ghana according to annual work plans;
- Collaborate with Partners to plan, implement and monitor project activities
- Ensure the mainstreaming of the project into national level initiatives
- Maintain good relations with administrative authorities and stakeholders who can positively or negatively influence project results, to ensure successful implementation;
- Ensure regular contact with other conservation partners in the project area and, where possible, develop joint activities in synergy for sustainability
- Ensure regular exchange of information with the Forestry program coordinator in Yaoundé (Cameroon);
- Develop an appropriate mechanism for involving local people in project activities;
- Prepare ToRs for recruiting and coordinate the work of national consultants;
- Ensure implementation of the recommendations of project management and the Steering Committee;
- Create a framework for dialogue, reflection and contribution by stakeholders concerned with good governance, conservation and sustainable management of natural resources in the project area.

2b. Project management
- Facilitate the development of quarterly and annual work plans and budgets in collaboration with other partners and ensure their implementation;
- Ensure the timely technical and financial preparation of project reports and coordinate the development of an appropriate internal monitoring and evaluation system for project performance and project staff;
- Work closely with the other project partners, collaborators and IUCN members for implementation;
- Ensure technical and financial implementation of the project in Ghana
- Supervise partners workplan and ensure effective implementation and reporting
- Work closely with CECI and WUSC project team and other partners to ensure consistency, synergy and complementarity of interventions
- Coordinate other IUCN Projects in Ghana and maintain a god relationship with the Government, IUCN members and Partners and other key stakeholders
- Develop other opportunities through networking, proposal development and ensure the growth of IUCN in Ghana.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Have a postgraduate degree (at least Master II degree) in one of the environmental sciences and rural development disciplines;

• Have at least 7 years of experience in the field of sustainable natural resource management, particularly in the area of nature-based solutions and adaptation to climate change

• Have an excellent knowledge of the environmental, political, economic and social context of environmental management in Ghana in general and protected areas in West Africa

• Have a proven experience in technical and financial management;

• Have an excellent level of spoken and written English language

• Proficiency in French will be an advantage

• Have a good knowledge of computer tools and software for office and electronic communication.

• Have good knowledge of community engagement

• Other criteria

Demonstrate experience of working in multidisciplinary, multicultural and multilingual teams.


• Must be able to speak at least one of the Akan languages in Ghana, proficiency in Twi is an added advantage

• Communication skills and ability to work in multidisciplinary,

• Strong organizational, synthesis and report writing skills and excellent attention to detail;

• High discretion on all strategic and financial information;

• Very open-minded and innovative

• Rigorous and precise in work;

• Please Note: The above TORs contain the main responsibilities and duties of this position. However in an ever evolving organization such as IUCN staff members are expected to show flexibility in their approach to work and be willing to undertake other tasks that are reasonably allocated to them but which are not part of their regular TORs. Where any task becomes a regular part of staff member’s responsibilities, the TORs should be changed
