Our client's team consists of specialists who lead on the development of environment strategy and deliver corporate technical advice.  They also provide expert technical support to the group that is not readily available elsewhere in the company such as water quality.  The post-holder will have opportunities to work throughout the group's network in England, Wales and Scotland. The National Environmental Management Advisor will champion and ensure the effective operation of the Environmental Management System (EMS), helping it deliver a better environment for its customers whilst complying with statutory requirements and internal procedures.  The post holder will work closely with the Group Environment Policy Manager taking an overview of EMS and advising on the performance and possible improvements on its form and function of the EMS.  The Advisor will be the national expert on environmental management systems, environmental auditing and ISO14001.  The Advisor will be expected to be available to advise people throughout the organisation on the  function of process and procedure with respect to environmental management.
The National Environmental Management Advisor will be involved in a variety of work at corporate and local level.  Examples of corporate level work that the post-holder will be expected to undertake are:
• environmental compliance and performance reporting
• development of internal operational guidance and direction, particularly with regard to the EMS
• maintain the internal EMS Register of Regulations
• strategic oversight of environmental regulatory compliance on all environmental legislative aspects
• liaison with relevant government departments.
• lead on development of the organisation's response to consultations from Defra, Environment Agency and Scottish Environment Protection Agency on legislation, codes of Practice or guidance centred on environmental management systems and contribute to other consultations as appropriate
Work at local level will include technical support, documentation and advice on matters relating to the use of the internal EMS
Qualifications, skills and experience required
- You will need a relevant degree and a significant relevant post chartered experience.
- A current UK driving licence is essential for this post.
- Good understanding of Environment and Heritage issues, including an understanding of the regulatory framework for environmental management in the UK and Europe
- Experience of the management of an EMS
- Negotiation and diplomacy skills.
- proven people management and motivation skills;
- good written and spoken communication skills;
- experience with Microsoft spreadsheet and database software and their use for analysis and presentation of numerical data;
- working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation;
- financial and commercial awareness;
It would also be an advantage if you could offer any of the following:
• Chartered or full professional membership of IEMA
• Formal IEMA approved Environmental Auditor training resulting in formal registration with IEMA as Environmental Auditor
• Experience of environmental legal compliance monitoring
• Experience of the management of an EMS in a multi-site company
• Experience of EMS training
