Description

The Muleshoe Ranch Preserve Manager will develop, manage and advance conservation programs for more than 50,000 acres within the second largest unfragmented landscape of the American Southwest. The Muleshoe Ranch Preserve Manager is responsible for the day to day operations of Muleshoe Ranch Cooperative Management Area (MRCMA) and provides technical support for all associated activities, including supervision of 3 full-time employees.  The MRCMA consists of 5,200 acres of deeded land owned by The Nature Conservancy, and 48,500 acres of federal land.  The MRCMA is cooperatively managed with the US BLM and US Forest Service and the Preserve Manager is The Nature Conservancy’s on site manager.  The Preserve Manager will be responsible for managing the general operation and function of this historic location (maintenance of 10 historic buildings (including 6 casitas for guest services), solar array, outbuildings, hot springs facilities, etc.) guest services, and public recreational management.  The Preserve Manager is responsible for leveraging the Best Management Practices for landscape conservation, wildlife connectivity, habitat restoration, and watershed management with our partners, neighbors, and communities to support the Arizona Chapter and its Initiatives.  The Preserve Manager will be required to work closely with the San Pedro Watershed Program Manager to effectively integrate work accomplished on and off the Muleshoe Ranch Preserve with ongoing work elsewhere in the larger San Pedro watershed.

This job will require sufficient knowledge and work experience to administer the following functions:

  • Plans and directs preserve management programs and stewardship
  • Addresses critical threats to natural systems and individual species
  • Fosters cross-site learning among an international conservation community
  • Participates in the San Pedro Watershed Team for landscape scale planning and implementation
  • Helps develop and implement conservation strategies for the San Pedro watershed
  • Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental affairs including local community
  • Employs a full range of management and communication tools to secure public and private support for TNC conservation priorities. 
  • Coordinates community support
  • Implements  preserve, watershed, and Initiative plans
  • Maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public
  • Supervises three preserve staff
  • Working knowledge and willingness to develop additional skillsets required to maintain and repair the building infrastructure, operate and maintain ranch equipment, and work remotely to maintain, repair, and develop fences and wells in the backcountry.
