Job summary
Reporting to the Deputy Chief Executive, the post is a key strategic and leadership position within the organisation. As part of the Senior Management Team, the post holder will be responsible for contributing to the delivery of the vision and mission of the MSC and to the collective management and strategic development of the organisation. The post holder will be a major contributor to the continued development of the organisation and will lead and be responsible for dedicated teams engaging fisheries, supply chain partners and other stakeholders in key markets and throughout the region. Within the organisation the work will involve:-
- Managing regional headquarters staff based in Hong Kong and country-based teams covering Australia, New Zealand and Japan;
- Managing fisheries engagement in the Pacific region, with an emphasis on tuna;
- Developing the MSC engagement in the region and leading on the implementation of the MSC’s strategic plan (2012-2017) which is currently under development but which will prioritise development of the programme in the Asia Pacific region;
- Coordinate the engagement of diverse stakeholders interested in the MSC programme within the region, responding to the associated communication priorities and promoting the programme to this broad audience; and,
- In liaison with the Standards and Licensing Director, have oversight of the management of the chain of custody holders within the region.
This post is critical to ensuring the credibility, rigour, quality and consistency of the MSC programme and this work requires exceptional leadership, diplomacy and communications skills to engage with a range of diverse stakeholder relationships that underpin the MSC’s ability to deliver its mission within the Asia-Pacific region.
Required skills and experience
Technical
- Qualifications. The post holder will have a post-graduate degree or equivalent.
- Experience. The MSC is looking for a highly motivated individual who can lead an equally motivated and well-qualified team. We envisage that the post holder will have substantial experience that demonstrates the progressive development of their career as they gained this experience. Some of this experience will have been gained from working in a multi-cultural environment and in the pursuit of environmental sustainability within the natural resource sector.
- Market-based eco-labelling programmes. The post holder must also have empathy for the role of market-based eco-labelling programmes and be willing to champion such initiatives.
- Logical thinker. Well-developed analytical and systematic problem solving skills, demonstrating sound reasoning abilities and logical decision-making.
- IT. Well-developed computer and IT skills, including the use of standard Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) . Personal commitment to the importance of sustainable fisheries and the contribution of market-based ecolabelling as an agent of change. Ability to withstand and respond objectively to challenge from stakeholders with differing viewpoints.
- Success factors. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
- Experience of the management of staff teams;
- Evidence of natural resource management, preferably within the aquatic sector; and
- Demonstrable leadership skills.
Stakeholder Oriented It is essential that the post holder has a clear understanding of, and affinity for, stakeholder-engaged processes such as those operated by the MSC. The successful candidate will be able to:
- Demonstrate effective experience of working in partnership with stakeholders in resource management, science or policy development, preferably in an international context. This may be from, but not limited to, the fisheries sector, scientific community, the conservation or environmental community.
- Evidence of an ability to successfully manage relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and collaborators, with a people-centred approach to business and work essential.
- Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity to the diversity of values, views and approaches to issues relevant to the MSC programme by stakeholders around the world.
Management and Organisational Abilities The successful candidate will be able to:
- Demonstrate excellence in leading and motivating teams of people to achieve the overall mission and vision of an organisation.
- Demonstrate an ability to develop their team’s performance through coaching and effective communication, resolve personnel issues and add value to their staff.
- Demonstrate strategic thinking and planning at an organisational level.
- Experience of developing budgets and monitoring expenditure.
- Demonstrate a high level of experience in project management, delivery and evaluation.
Communication The successful candidate will be able to:

Demonstrate excellence in written and spoken English with an ability to communicate successfully with a diverse range of people; preferably including at least one other regional language. This will include an ability to represent the MSC as an ambassador and negotiator in an international arena at the highest levels of business, government, science and the non-profit world.
- Presentation skills suitable for public speaking at international conference level and to governance bodies and other stakeholder groups.
