POSITION SUMMARY
 

The Preserve Assistant, Moraine Nature Preserve, performs and participates in invasive plant management and preserve maintenance in partnership with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Division of Nature Preserves.  The 465-acre Moraine Nature Preserve, Valparaiso, IN features rolling forested ridges, steep ravines, former agricultural fields, pothole wetlands and a pond.  

This is a full-time (35-hours), short-term (6-months) position with an approximate time frame of mid-April to mid-October.
 

 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

The Preserve Assistant, Moraine Nature Preserve maintains preserve areas, including controlling herbaceous invasive species, picking up trash, keeping trails groomed, mowing and other required tasks as necessary.  S/he also maintains tools and equipment and learns how to identify native and non-native species.
 

 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • High-school diploma and 6 months of related experience or education in science-related field.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g., lawn mower, chainsaw, tractor, two-way radio, etc.).
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Experience performing physical work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be able to obtain herbicide applicator’s license.
  • Ability to follow instructions from crew leader and colleagues.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of Northwest Indiana plants/community types helpful but not required.
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.; lawn mower, chainsaw, tractor, brush-cutter, two-way radio, etc.).

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

  • Works under close or infrequent supervision.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and wetlands, and under physically demanding circumstances.               
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain, and the ability to carry a 35-pound backpack sprayer.
  • May occasionally interact with visitors.
 
AUTO SAFETY POLICY
 

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
