Description

The ICCT has an internship opportunity in its San Francisco office to work in our fuels program. This position will be attractive for students and researchers with experience in dealing with uncertainty using Monte Carlo analysis, and an interest in the oil industry and the environment. We expect that applicants will have a first degree in a technical discipline such as engineering, environmental science, economics, physics or mathematics, although comparable experience will be considered. Preference will be given to students with, or working towards, postgraduate qualifications. The successful applicant will work assessing uncertainties in the estimation of the carbon intensity of upstream oil extraction processes. Working on their own initiative, in collaboration with ICCT staff in San Francisco and London and with Stanford University, they will develop a framework to analyze uncertainties in a Microsoft Excel based lifecycle analysis tool, and use this framework to identify key data issues, culminating in co-authoring a paper investigating the subject. This is an opportunity to make an important contribution in a developing field with direct relevance to policy in both the U.S. and Europe.

Our Fuels Program is also actively engaged in the development of policies to promote the use of alternative fuels in transport. The successful applicant may also be asked to contribute to other projects that work toward the broader mission of the ICCT. This unique ICCT internship position provides an excellent opportunity for an early-career researcher to learn about opportunities to reduce emissions from the oil industry and about how to work in a dynamic, policy-oriented setting.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in English is required
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and writing skills are required
  • Advanced experience with MS Excel, and proficiency with MS Word and PowerPoint, are required
  • Experience and understanding of Monte Carlo analysis is required
  • Strong project/task management and organization skills are required
  • Familiarity with oil production processes, and oil data sources is desirable
  • Experience of the ‘Crystal Ball’ add-on for Microsoft Excel, data analysis with statistical tools such as Stata or R, and/or proficiency in computer programming is desirable
  • Understanding of and/or experience in lifecycle analysis is desirable

Position Details

The intern is expected to work full-time (preferably) or part-time for up to 12 weeks through the summer months. The location of the internship is the ICCT office in San Francisco, CA, located in the Financial District above the Montgomery BART station. The internship will be paid; salary will be commensurate with experience.
