Description

About Us:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Role Profile:

ZSL is seeking a Monitoring Kelp Implications for Wild Harvesting Intern. This paid internship is part of a 6 months project to help in the piloting of novel methods for large-scale holistic monitoring of the abundance and distribution of British kelp. The job will involve working with Dr Chris Yesson of Institute of Zoology and Prof Juliet Brodie of the Natural History Museum. The main research will be to develop and test (under guidance) a predictive model of kelp distribution based on acoustic survey data. This will include researching academic and grey literature, communicating with other researchers and compiling this information into a report to be presented to the funders (the Crown Estate) at the end of the project

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The role will include an assessment of the usability of LiDAR and Multi-beam acoustic data for the large scale determination of the distribution and abundance of shallow water kelps forests.
  • Data from pre-existing surveys will be gathered and analysed. This will involve the manipulation of large GIS datasets and running statistical analyses. The more technical aspects of these tasks will be supported by other research staff on the project.
  • The role involves conducting and supporting a small amount of fieldwork.
  • A trial of a rapid assessment technique to monitor kelp bed distribution will be conducted.
  • This fieldwork will involve operating a kayak in British coastal waters, gathering acoustic data and video footage for subsequent analysis.

Person Specification:

The intern will be supported by other research staff on the project but would be ideal if they have:

  • A BSc/BA degree in a relevant subject or relevant experience.
  • Some experience of researching academic and grey literature.
  • Some experience of communicating with other researchers.
  • Well-developed skills in using MS office packages, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong organisational, interpersonal and communication skills, both face to face and in writing
  • Proven ability to work effectively with teams.
  • Some experience of presenting datasets would be beneficial but not essential.
  • Some experience of using a variety of statistical analysis techniques would be beneficial (i.e. R coding).
  • Some knowledge of compiling information into a report would be beneficial.
  • Desire to learn more about the world of abundance and distribution of British kelp.

We are looking for a creative, motivated person to support our work for wildlife. The Intern will have exposure to a variety of departments and will gain valuable experience in analysing data, monitoring and assessment techniques and practical fieldwork opportunities. This is an excellent opportunity for a student or recent graduate looking to gain experience in an international organisation. Join us and let’s work for wildlife.

Please note: This is a paid internship paying the UK National Living Wage on a full-time, 6 months fixed-term contract starting from 1st May 2017 – 31st October 2017. The successful candidate will work 37.5 hours a week (Monday to Friday).
