Modeller and Researcher: Energy and Climate (Boston)

 

SEI seeks a mid- to senior-level Modeller and Researcher to join SEI’s energy modelling programme, based at SEI’s U.S. Centre in Somerville. The programme develops quantitative modelling tools and techniques and conducts modelling and policy analysis worldwide, with a special focus on developing countries.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Plan and implement innovative research projects that use quantitative modeling and analysis to inform energy, climate, and development policy.
  • Build and apply models of energy and economic systems, energy technologies, climate change mitigation measures, and policy interventions.
  • Research modeling tools and methods and help develop SEI’s modeling toolkit.
  • Collaborate with developing country researchers and policy makers and help enhance their technical and analytical capacity.
  • Produce, review, and edit technical reports, academic papers, briefs, and presentations on modeling and policy research.
  • Maintain and build relationships with existing funders and partners and develop new funding opportunities.
  • Manage and mentor junior staff; monitor the quality of their work and provide regular feedback.
  • Explore joint research opportunities and collaborate with colleagues at SEI’s U.S. and other centers.
  • Raise the profile of SEI’s research by presenting, publishing, and communicating externally.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will have:

  • An advanced degree and significant work experience in energy or environmental policy, engineering, economics, or a related field (minimally, a Ph.D. plus 1 year of work experience or a master’s degree plus 5 years of work experience).
  • Expertise in energy and/or climate policy, energy technologies, and climate change mitigation.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, building, and using energy system models for policy analysis, especially climate mitigation analysis.
  • A strong background in quantitative methods and data analysis.
  • Experience with computer programming to build or facilitate building quantitative models.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills (for both technical and non-technical audiences) and a record of publishing and presenting research results in academic, policy, or other forums.
  • Demonstrated project and task management capabilities, including supervising other staff and quality assuring work products.
  • A record of developing and securing funding for new research projects.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Proven success in work relations with a range of partners, such as research institutes, governments, and other non-profit organizations.
  • Strong leadership, management, technical, communications, interpersonal, and networking skills.

Additional highly desirable qualifications include:

  • Experience designing, building, and using macroeconomic models.
  • Expertise with equilibrium, optimization, agent-based, system dynamics, and/or artificial neural network modeling techniques.
  • Networks and contacts in one or more of the following areas: energy modelilng, low emission development/green growth, energy policy, climate policy.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse gas accounting and inventory standards.
  • Experience developing marginal abatement cost curves at a national or regional level.
  • Additional computer programming skills, such as Web and database programming skills.
  • Work experience in a developing country or countries.
  • Proficiency in one or more languages other than English.
