The Great Lakes/Atlantic Regional Office of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) has an opening for a Mitigation Specialist.  The successful candidate will join a highly motivated conservation team responsible for delivering wetland mitigation programs primarily focused in New York and Vermont.  This full-time salaried position will operate out of the North Atlantic Field office in Syracuse, NY, or the Great Lakes/Atlantic Regional Office in Ann Arbor, MI.  Funding for the position is guaranteed for the next two years with subsequent years being dependent on the success of the program.

Qualifications

Candidates must have at a minimum, a Bachelor of Science degree in a natural resources field.  A wetland ecology emphasis is highly desirable and engineering experience is advantageous.  Relevant field experience in wetland mitigation, vegetation sampling, hydrology monitoring, wetland delineation, wetland restoration or wildlife habitat management is preferred.  Applicants must have a basic knowledge of state and federal wetland regulations, policies and laws.  Excellent written and oral communication skills, inter-personal skills, mitigation plan writing, and monitoring report writing are required. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

To assist with the mitigation program, the successful candidate will work with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state agencies, large corporations, businesses, and consulting firms on wetland mitigation projects.  Workload will be primarily focused on delivering wetland mitigation for the New York and Vermont In-Lieu Fee Mitigation Programs. Duties and responsibilities include:

 

  • Developing mitigation plans for wetland restoration projects. 
  • Provide supporting documentation and literature review for mitigation plans.
  • Conducting wetland performance monitoring and wetland delineations.
  • GIS mapping to analyze various data sets to analyze suitability for wetland restoration.
  • Working with DU engineering staff to survey and design wetland restoration projects.
