Title: Migratory Bird Program Director

Introduction:

American Bird Conservancy (ABC), an international bird conservation organization, is seeking a dynamic, entrepreneurial leader to build and manage its new Migratory Bird Program.  The Director will spearhead the development and implementation of conservation programs for the highest priority birds in the United States to ensure these species are protected both in the US and internationally.  The Director will work collaboratively with a wide array of external organizations and experts and will serve as the lead public spokesperson for the program.  The Migratory Bird Program Director will focus on US WatchList bird species to ensure that native species and their habitats are protected, that their protection is valued by society, and they are routinely considered in land-use and policy decision-making. 

Primary Duties:

    1. Lead a coordinated campaign to build a conservation strategy, constituency, and program that protects migratory bird species using a full life-cycle approach. 

 

    1. Identify, encourage, and use the latest and best science. Work collaboratively with the ornithological community to identify the most critical conservation needs and solutions.

 

    1. Coordinate with Joint Ventures, federal, and state agencies to secure appropriate protection and management of key habitat on public lands.

 

    1. Coordinate with the ABC’s international team and international partners to conserve critical wintering and migration habitats.

 

    1. Identify policy solutions which address the most pressing threats to migratory birds and to promote public funding for bird conservation.

 

    1. Identify, cultivate, and solicit public and private supporters for program priorities; generate and manage funds.

 

    1. Elevate ABC’s profile and influence to heighten public awareness and support for conserving birds.  Promote the full range of our migratory species conservation efforts.

 

  1. Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

The Migratory Bird Program Director will be an energetic, entrepreneurial leader with proven success in delivering conservation results, creating complex conservation plans and initiatives in collaboration with others, and in generating financial and public support for conservation.  ABC is looking for someone who is creative, persuasive, and can think strategically and practically.  Must be able to manage, mentor, and empower others and build strong and lasting partnerships.

    1. A master’s degree or higher is preferred. Excellent background and understanding of conservation practices and bird conservation needs.

 

    1. At least eight years of responsibility and experience in conservation or related wildlife management; supervisory management experience preferred.

 

    1. Demonstrated ability to translate strategic, visionary ideas into functioning, sustainable programs and initiatives.

 

    1. Able to work well with others. Strong organization and administrative skills.

 

    1. Experience in working with partnerships, networks, or alliances. Demonstrated success in working with a work wide variety of people and partner institutions, and in cross-cultural situations.

 

    1. Ability to develop creative, energetic conservation and advocacy campaigns that produce lasting results.

 

    1. Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.

 

    1. Ability to meet deadlines and exceed expectations.

 

    1. Excellent oral and written communications skills.

 

    1. Able to travel, often on short notice.
