AMC conducts our Mid-Atlantic conservation work through an office in Bethlehem , PA. This three-person office works to conserve land and increase recreational opportunities in the 3.5 million-acre Highlands region of PA, NJ, NY and CT, with a specific focus on the PA Highlands. In addition to our PA-based staff, AMC has a Delaware Valley Chapter that serves more than 6,000 members and covers Southeastern PA and Northwestern NJ . Through this chapter, AMC offers more than 750 recreational activities each year led by our member volunteers.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities of the policy manager are develop, help fund, and lead our regional conservation efforts and partnerships in the Mid-Atlantic region and to ensure that this work furthers AMC's mission and Vision 2020 goals.

Key duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Leading AMC's conservation policy work in the Mid-Atlantic Highlands, including identifying opportunities to carry out AMC conservation goals and then organizing and implementing those campaigns or projects. Particular emphasis will be placed on the PA Highlands and the development of a campaign to advance special designation of this 1.9 million-acre, 13-county landscape, as well as implementing a vision for land protection and the Pennsylvania Highlands Trail Network.

  • Coordinate closely with the development department and the Director of Conservation Strategies to raise funds to support the Mid-Atlantic conservation programs. Tasks include grant writing, identifying, cultivating and meeting with foundations, and participating in AMC donor trips and other special fund-raising events.

  • Collaborate with the Highlands Coalition and the Pennsylvania Committee of the Highlands Coalition (PA Committee) to advance protection and awareness of the Pennsylvania Highlands.

  • Organize and coordinate active citizen support for AMC's Mid-Atlantic conservation programs and priority issues, including drafting and editing action alerts, policy memos, lobbying materials and press releases.

  • Supervise and mentor Mid-Atlantic conservation staff, which include a PA Committee Coordinator and a Mid-Atlantic Recreation Planner. Lead Mid-Atlantic strategic planning efforts and ensure the program work is closely integrated with and engages other AMC departments, especially research, trails, education, destinations, communications, and chapter volunteers.

  • Inform, educate, and lobby as necessary appropriate state and federal governmental agencies, Congressional staff, and state legislators.

Employment Qualifications

  • B.A. degree (or higher) plus a minimum of five years' experience in fields related to  conservation advocacy, land and water protection, environmental policy, and/or grassroots organizing, or related experience, is required
  • Excellent working knowledge of and relationships with conservation and/or recreation groups in the region, preferred
  • Experience with effectively planning or implementing land, water and/or trail protection campaigns
  • Proven ability to work with little supervision, work in partnerships and coalitions, show initiative, and provide leadership.
  • Familiarity with state and federal government institutions and processes, and how to influence public policy outcomes
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and familiarity with using social networking tools for advocacy
  • Experience in fundraising from individuals, foundations, and/or corporations, and a desire to raise money.
  • Proven experience in working effectively with volunteers
  • Solid computer skills and a willingness to learn more as needed
  • Strong personnel, budget and program management skills and the ability to maintain a harmonious working environment while working under pressure
  • Physical abilities required:  Majority of work is performed in a standard office setting in a building with limited accessibility.
  • Ability to occasionally travel safely in the backcountry in all weather conditions carrying a backpack of up to 20 pounds is preferred.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and operate standard office equipment.
  • Valid driver's license required.
