Mercury Program Coordinator - Providence

Clean Water Fund is hiring a Mercury Program Coordinator to conduct outreach and program development for our Rhode Island mercury lamps take-back program.  Clean Water Fund (CWF) is a national non-profit research and education organization that promotes the public interest on issues relating to energy, water, waste, toxics and natural resources. CWF’s goals include promoting clean water and safe drinking water, safeguarding the public from health threatening chemicals and promoting renewable energy solutions to climate change. CWF’s programs build on and complement those of Clean Water Action, with which CWF shares some staffing and office space. Clean Water Action has over 30,000 Rhode Island members and 1 million members nationally.

Clean Water Fund is working to phase out the residential use of mercury containing products, including home thermostats and compact fluorescent lamps. Clean Water Fund is now setting up a take-back program for compact fluorescent lamps at retail locations. Bulbs will be collected from the retail outlets and recycled by a vendor in order to prevent improper disposal

Coordinator Responsibilities
The Program Coordinator will conduct outreach directly to retailers to engage them in the recycling program, educating them about the goals of the program and the benefits it provides to businesses. The Coordinator will work with vendors that are enrolled on an ongoing basis, providing trainings and regular check-ins at the retail sites. The Coordinator will work with other non-profits, state agencies, and municipal governments to advertise and build support for the project; and will coordinate advertising efforts to inform the public of the project and drop-off sites. In addition to program implementation, the coordinator will work with Clean Water Fund staff to identify additional funding opportunities for the program.

Qualifications:
  • Experience organizing the public on environmental or health issues.
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental initiatives.
  • Successful media and social media experience, including skillful press advisories and releases.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including experience in preparing and delivering public presentations.
  • Proven team player with appropriate interpersonal skills in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to design a work plan, prioritize and meet goals.
  • Computer skills, including word processing, databases, power point and/or web design
  • Well-organized and self-motivated.
  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout Rhode Island and work some weekday evenings and weekends.
  • Willingness and ability to work hard and learn quickly can substitute for some of the above qualifications. Experience with canvass programs highly desirable.
  • Lifting and carrying objects up to 20 lbs.
