(Early Detection and Rapid Response Programme)

Closing date for submissions of interest: 08 August 2011

  • Do you feel you could act as a mentor?
  • Do you have 10 - 30 years experience in biodiversity management?
  • Do you have experience or an interest in the field of invasive alien plant species?
  • Have you worked alongside younger people from different backgrounds to you?
  • Do you want to build capacity in the field of biodiversity study and project management?
If you answered yes to all the above then please consider being a mentor to staff members on this exciting programme.

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) in partnership with the Working for Water Programme of the Department of Water Affair is implementing an Early Detection and Rapid Response Programme that targets emerging invasive alien plants.  SANBI will develop relationships with other key agencies to implement this programme.

In order to achieve its aims SANBI has employed contract staff in different provinces.  Staff members have been drawn from different science disciplines and a wide diversity of backgrounds.  In order to get the most effective performance from employees it is important to nurture and develop their capacity.  One of the most effective ways to develop capacity is to give the employee support through a mentor programme.  The sponsor (Department of Water Affairs) has agreed to and supports the capacity development through mentor support.

Mentors will receive a brief training session on mentoring and how to get the most out of the relationship between mentor and staff.  Mentors will work alongside staff members at all levels of the programme to encourage both professional and personal development that will enhance the staff members ability to deliver the programme objectives.  SANBI envisages a 7 months mentor relationship between 1 September 2011 and 31 March 2012.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please, consider whether you can devote at least sixteen hours a month to this task.  Please consider how much you would like to be paid per hour for doing this work.  Please e-mail Philip Ivey at p.ivey@sanbi.org.za and he will forward you the necessary documentation to sign onto the mentor programme and register on the SANBI supplier database.  If you are already registered on SANBI supplier database and are interested in the mentor programme please send an e-mail to Philip Ivey outlining your experience and the hourly rate you would like to charge for providing this service.

Closing date for submissions of interest: 08 August 2011 – to be e-mailed to p.ivey@sanbi.org.za
